Federal Pell Grant
The Federal Pell Grant is intended to be the "floor" of a student's financial aid package and is usually combined with other forms of student financial aid to meet a student's full financial need. This and other grants do not need to be repaid.
For more information, see the Student Guide for Financial Aid from the U.S. Department of Education (ED).
Perkins Loan
The Federal Perkins Loan Program is for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a participating post-secondary institution who need a loan to meet their educational expenses. The current interest rate is 5 percent. For more information see the Student Guide Financial Aid from the U.S. Department of Education (ED).
Tuition Remission Program
The Tuition Remission Program allows University employees to take classes from UNM, CNM, University Departments offering classes or seminars, or the Continuing Education Department. The employee must be officially employed by the University prior to the first day of class(es). The Tuition Remission Program gives every University employee the opportunity to attend classes to complete a degree, enhance a current job position, or explore subjects for personal fulfillment. There are specific classes geared especially for UNM employees using this benefit, Introductory Math and Accounting classes are two examples. Each employee is granted the cost equivalent of eight credit hours for the fall and spring semester, and the cost equivalent of four credit hours for the summer semester. An employee may apply the equivalent of resident, undergraduate tuition for two (2) of the total tuition credit hours allowed under this program each calendar year towards personal development (i.e. non work related) courses at the UNM Division of Continuing Education. The calendar year total amount will be based on the tuition rate in effect at the end of the calendar year. Tuition Remission benefits can be used to pay for University classes, classes from the Continuing Education Department or CNM. An employee does not need any authorization to take classes before or after work hours, but will need supervisory authorization for classes taken during the employee's regular work schedule. Employees must get a supervisory signature for all Continuing Education classes or classes taken at CNM.
Continuing Education/CNM Classes: Employees can use the cost equivalent of eight credit hours (fall/spring) and four hours (summer) at the current undergraduate rate toward classes taught at the Continuing Education Department or CNM. These classes must be taken before or after the employee's scheduled work hours unless the employee's supervisor gives permission. Employees in the Tuition Remission Program can take CNM classes only if a similar class is not available at UNM.
Spouse/Domestic Partner Benefit: The employee's Tuition Remission benefits can also be used by a spouse or domestic partner. An employee who does not use his or her full Tuition Remission may apply any remaining benefit toward tuition for one (1) course not to exceed four (4) credit hours per semester or summer session for his or her spouse or domestic partner, provided the course is taken for academic credit. Spouses or domestic partners are not eligible for Tuition Remission benefits for Continuing Education courses or classes at CNM.
Taxability: The value of tuition benefits covered by this policy may be taxable to the employee. The determination of which benefits are taxable is made by the Internal Revenue Service and is subject to change without notice. Currently, the employee is taxed on the tuition cost of: all courses taken by a domestic partner.
Tuition Remission forms are found in the University Policy and Procedures Manual, section 3700 . They must be brought to the Bursar's Office, Student Service Center, Room 170, prior to the Enrollment Cancellation deadline. Any forms brought to the Bursar's Office after the Enrollment Cancellation deadline may be subject to the $30.00 late registration fee. Refer to Late Registration or Enrollment Cancellation terms. If you have any questions about the The Tuition Remission Program, please contact the UNM Bursar's Office at (505) 277-5363.

Third Party Students
If tuition is being paid by a Third Party, the Bursar's Office must receive an authorization letter each semester prior to the Enrollment Cancellation date. Due to the volume of students that are enrolled at the Universiy of New Mexico (UNM) through Third Party authorizations, it is necessary to establish standard procedures that must be followed by all vendors and students.
The following information applies to students at the University of New Mexico:
-
All charges from prior semesters must be paid.
-
Student must be enrolled in classes (including second eight week courses) prior to the Financial Enrollment Cancellation.
-
Failure to provide the necessary authorization will result in Enrollment Cancellation Due to Lack of Financial Commitment.
-
Sponsored students registering on or after the first day of classes will be responsible for a late registration fee.
-
All Third Party students must inform the Financial Aid Office of their award by the beginning of each Academic semester (fall, spring, and summer).
-
It is the responsibility of each student to provide the Third Party agency with required academic information, such as class schedules and grades.
-
The student is responsible for any charges not paid by the Third Party vendor. Fees not paid by Third Party must be paid prior to the Financial Enrollment Cancellation deadline or the student will be removed from classes.
-
Students must notify the Bursar's Office of changes to their account caused by dropping or adding classes.
Third Party Vendor Sponsorships - Please observe the following:
-
All authorizations must be received prior to the Financial Enrollment Cancellation date for the upcoming semester. If the authorization is not received in time, the student will be removed from all classes. The student will have to re-register for classes, subject to availability, and pay a $30.00 late registration fee.
-
Authorization must specify exactly what category of education cost will or will not be paid (i.e., tuition, books, special fees, housing, etc.).
The University of New Mexico and the Bursar's Office must receive the necessary information to continue providing quality services to our students. If you have further questions, please contact the Third Party Coordinator at 925-9568, or visit the Bursar's Office located in the Student Services Center, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
