What is the National Student Exchange Program?
NSE offers UNM students an opportunity for educational travel and study at 138 institutions of higher learning in other areas of the United States including Hawaii, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
What does it Cost?
There is a one-time, non-refundable fee of $100.00 to begin the exchange process. UNM participates only in Plan-B, where students pay full-time tuition to the University of New Mexico before leaving for their Host Campus. They pay no tuition at their Host University. Expenses for room and board, course fees, books, transportation, incidentals, etc. are the responsibility of the exchange student.
Can I Use My UNM Financial Aid Toward National Student Exchange?
Yes! Because you pay tuition to UNM, most scholarships (Regents, Presidential, UNM Scholars, Zia, Activity, Amigo, etc.) can be used toward the NSE Program. In addition, all grants and loans are applicable.
How do I Maintain My UNM Scholarship While on Exchange?
Traditionally, as an NSE student on scholarship, you must maintain a 3.00 GPA per semester, but you are required only to complete 12 credits per semester at your Host University. As your scholarship may be more specific, please check with the Scholarship Office.
If you have questions regarding your tuition charges from the Bursar's Office, please e-mail Patti Sanchez at sanchezp@unm.edu. For specific program information, please contact Rob Burford at 277-3361.
Students taking courses at multiple campuses are charged for all courses taken at the respective branch rates plus tuition for main campuses courses. There is no differential tuition for 12 - 18 hours.
As mandated state statute, there is a reduced tuition and fee rate, currently $5 per credit hour, for senior citizens who meet all of the following criteria:
- Is a New Mexico Resident;
- Age sixty-five (65) or older as of the 21st day of the semester;
- Registering for 6 hours or less;
- Registering on or after the first of the 16-week semester with no registration attempts prior to the first day. (Please note: It is acceptable to register on or after the first day of the 16-week semester for courses starting later in the semester. These courses include second 8-week, 12-week and 4-week courses.)
Please contact Berlynn Ranck at (505) 925-9604 or at berlynny@unm.edu with any questions.
This program is coordinated by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). The WICHE program serves graduate students and the WUE program serves undergraduates. Through WUE, students may enroll in many two year and four year programs at a reduced non-resident tuition level: 150% of the institutions regular resident tuition. In all cases, WUE tuition is considerably less than non-resident tuition.
Students may participate in this program in order to go to a university that offers programs not available in their home state. Such as Latin American Studies or the Arts Program at the University of New Mexico. For Program information contact Recruitment Services at unmlobos.unm.edu or 277-8847.
