Return to homepage. Division of Endocrinology On-Call Policy (2/7/00)

For the purposes of this memo, "on-call" is defined as any period of time in which the individual is officially responsible (i.e., listed on the monthly endocrine call schedule) for responding to a request for information or assistance from another physician or patient. This includes both time spent in the hospital as well as time outside of the hospital (e.g., at home).

The faculty member on call for that month (or part of the month) has the primary responsibility to make sure the call schedule is complete for that month (or part of the month).

The Endo fellow on call is responsible for all first consult calls 24 hour/day if no residents are rotating through the service (exceptions below).

If a resident is rotating on the Endo service then that resident is responsible for call for one half the weekends that they are on the service. If there are 2 residents on the service simultaneously, then each resident will take one weekend on call and the Endo fellow will take the remaining weekend calls in that month.

The Endo Fellow will take all consults between 8am and 5pm weekdays and he/she can distribute them to the residents or complete them him/herself is no resident is available. After hour call will be divided by days between the residents and Endo fellow (i.e., days will be assigned equally, not individual calls divided equally). If there is no resident nor fellow, the word "none" will be noted on the schedule so that the operators will know to call the attending.

In case of conflict, the program director will make the decision about coverage.

When the Endo fellow is on call, he/she may not moonlight.

In order to meet the graduate Medical Education requirements for sufficient time off from clinical duties, (one 24 hour period per week averaged over a four week period), the Endo fellow will provide the program director a request for specific days off (one day = 24 hours) at least one week in advance of the month to be scheduled. If this request is not received on time, the program director will designate the days off.

A house officer is not expected to work more than 60 hours per week averaged over a four-week period. After hours on call does not count as work time unless the fellow needs to come to the hospital to see a consultation.

A medical student may not take primary call.
