Mission
The mission of the Office of Support for Effective Teaching (OSET) is to make teaching and teaching improvement an indispensable part of university life and a key dimension of the professional identity of every faculty member. OSET will endeavor to cultivate a campus-wide learning community that values and rewards excellence in teaching and learning and is responsive to the needs of instructional staff who want to enhance their teaching. Ideally, OSET will help to shape a campus culture that holds teaching in such high regard that all classes are ultimately taught by thoughtful and proficient instructors constantly striving to improve their teaching. OSET will provide opportunities for faculty to think and talk about their teaching, to get help with any aspect of their teaching, and to engage faculty in the national discourse about university teaching in which teaching is valued, visible, integrated and cutting edge. Accordingly, OSET will also provide resources for faculty to study teaching and to contribute to the burgeoning scholarship of teaching.
The Faculty Senate Teaching Enhancement Committee ( TEC ) serves as the advisory board to OSET.
Who We Are
OSET, the Office of Support for Effective Teaching, is the University's faculty development program. OSET is a result of the reorganization efforts of the Provost's office from the program previously known as CASTL in September 2006. This office serves as a general resource center for all UNM faculty including adjunct faculty, faculty on Branch campuses, teaching assistants, clinician educators and all others who have an instructional role in the classroom. The primary programs currently sponsored by OSET are New Faculty Orientation, Sucess in the Classroom, Teaching Awards, workshop series on topics of interest to faculty, and the coordination with the Faculty Senate Teaching Enhancement Committee of the University teaching awards
Partners
OSET works to create partnerships across the university community to promote teaching enhancement and faculty development. One newly established partnership is with New Media & Extended Learning. We recently offered a training session on WebCT just for new faculty and hope to provide training space for the WebCT division. In addition, OSET is a cosponsor of the Writing Across Communities (WAC) projects at UNM.
