Courses

The CELAC classes meet Monday thru Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. During this time you will have 4 different classes with up to four different teachers. You will be given instruction in the level that you tested into at the beginning of the semester, either low intermediate, intermediate, high intermediate, advanced, or academic bridge. Below is a list of the various courses offered.

Listening Comprehension and Conversation

Develops the ability to understand spoken English and provides practice in speaking.The intermediate level classes focus upon those skills necessary in everyday life, while the advanced courses prepare students for entry into the University.

Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary

Develops the ability to read a wide range of materials, from newspapers and American literature to academic texts. Students master the vocabulary necessary for good reading.

Written Composition

The ability to write well is very important for success in a U.S university. This course provides the instruction and practice necessary to develop good writing skills.

Grammar

This course provides English grammar instruction adjusted to the appropriate level of student proficiency.

Academic Bridge

This course is designed for graduate students and high advanced undergraduate students whose English proficiency has progressed to a level allowing them to take a combination of some CELAC English classes and some University academic classes for credit. This course develops academic reading, writing, and class discussion/presentation abilities to help students make the transition to University academic classes.

CELAC students come from many different countries and cultures. A cultural comparative approach, including discussions and information concerning American values and lifestyles, is integrated into each of the classes listed above. Students at all proficiency levels are exposed to a wide variety of American cultural experiences outside of the classroom through University tours and short field trips in Albuquerque and New Mexico.
