Sampling

A team of specialists in alluvial hydrology and irrigation paleoecology was assembled before excavation began. Dr. David Love of New Mexico Bureau of Mines is supervising geological analyses. Dr. Karen Adams of the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center is conducting archaeobotanical analyses. Dr. Manuel Palacios-Fest is analyzing ostrocodes and Susan Smith is the project palynologist.

The team met prior to excavation and discussed the overall research goals and local environmental conditions in the study area. They convened again during the first field season (2005) to review excavation progress and discuss future sampling. The team did not take samples until 2006, after most of the trench sections had been opened and large sections of the trench walls were visible. The four specialists collected "integrated samples" from locations that they all agreed upon and evaluated in advance, so that each type of sample (e.g., pollen) is matched to the others from the same context. Analyses of these samples is ongoing.
