ALBUQUERQUE CITY GUIDE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS |
|
Results And Analysis: · Information which I projected on maps clearly exhibits the Albuquerque city guide for the students. . · The major task was developing map of the southern neighborhood of the campus which comes under South Eastern quadrant of the city. · I have selected neighborhoods of Cornell DR and Vassar on one side and Central Avenue and Silver on the other side. All the buildings in this region were categorized and clearly shown on the map. · I found that these maps would be very helpful for students as the maps provided by the major city guides do not show the specific neighborhoods categorizing houses according to the choice of the student. |

Conclusion: The Arc-GIS 9.2 is a very helpful tool for the users in creating the maps according to the choice of the user with the available data in hand. The maps which I developed in this project would be very helpful to newly arriving students and give them quick access of the city without facing any difficulties. They can view the maps before arriving in the city and build self confidence among themselves and get an idea about the city and school as they would be sailing miles apart from their motherland.
Future Work: I would like to create a quick access guide of the city which exhibits all the major public facilities and housing options throughout the city which would be helpful not only to students but also the visitors. Due to lack of time I have just focused my ideas which majorly help students. I would post the maps in my personal webpage and suggest International Students office to distribute the maps to students and also post in the UNM webpage under the Prospective Students Section. |

Background: The key factor of this project is livability. This includes housing options, access to emergency services, mass transit, entertainment and recreational places in and around the city. Using Arc Gis 9.2 version the maps of the city of Albuquerque were developed. The maps include the major street view, Bus routes, parks and recreational places. The street view was majorly considered within 2-3 miles of the University campus. The maps are categorized under different living conditions depending upon the availability of housing within the budget of the student. The apartments, residential buildings are clearly shown with different shades which allows the student to choose the best possible housing within the proximity of the campus. The neighborhoods are clearly identified in the maps and are categorized providing the range of availability and rent charged by the owners. This enables the student to choose the best among the available houses. The maps including the major street views enables to estimate the distance to school, emergency services, grocery stores which is very essential for newly arriving International students. The specific areas are spotted in the south side of the campus where the residential houses are not very expensive and have good access to all the major grocery stores in the city. |
