Approved Electives for Civil Engineering and Construction Management

Civil Engineering students must take two design technical electives from the six listed below.  Note that at least one of these design electives must be completed prior to registering for CE 499L; the second can be taken concurrently with CE 499L.  Please note:  the scheduling of these courses from year to year is subject to change.

  • CE 411 Reinforced Concrete Design (Spring)
  • CE 424 Structural Design in Metals (Fall)
  • CE 436 Biological Wastewater Treatment (Fall)
  • CE 440 Design of Hydraulic Systems (Spring)
  • CE 462 Foundation Engineering (Fall)
  • CE 482 Highway and Traffic Engineering (Spring)

The “non-design” technical elective in the senior year must be chosen from among the following:

  • Civil Engineering:
Any non-required course 400-494, including a third course from the list of design technical electives above.
  • Computer Science                       251L, 375
  • Mechanical Engineering             356, 456
  • Chemistry                                       212, 253L, 301/303L
  • Earth & Planetary Science          301, 333, 427, 462
  • Geography                                     281L, 365
  • Mathematics & Statistics             311, 312, 313, 314, 375, 461
  • Physics                                           262

APPROVED ELECTIVES FOR CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

Construction Electives

In order to tailor their degree programs to their interests, Construction Management students have the opportunity to take one Construction elective course. This elective should be at the 300 or 400 level and relevant to the student’s anticipated professional career. Below is a list of suggested courses.  (These may not be offered each semester.  If there is a particular course you would like to take, it would be a good idea to monitor the schedule each semester so that you know in which semester the course will be offered.)

Management Electives

In the Construction Management degree program, three management elective courses are required.  You may choose from any 300 level management classes for which you have the prerequisites.  However, the Minor in Management requires a selection from specific courses – see below.

Minor in Management

Described on page 92 of the 2010-2011 UNM catalog, the Management Minor from the Anderson Schools of Management requires 18 hours.  Mgt 202, Stat 145, and Econ 106 are required.  The remaining 9 credit hours must be selected from Mgt 300, 306, 308, 310, 322, 324, 326, 328, 329, 330, or 459.  You must receive grades of C- or better in all courses applied in the minor.

Mgt 202, Stat 145, and Econ 106 are part of the CM program.  Because the upper-level Mgt 303 is required in the CM program, the School of Engineering does NOT allow it to count toward the minor.

You should work with your academic advisor to choose appropriate management courses.
