Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism & Mass Communication
The Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of New Mexico offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Journalism & Mass Communication through the College of Arts and Sciences with concentrations in either Multimedia Journalism or Strategic Communication. Our Multimedia Journalism concentration combines print, broadcasting and online journalism and helps to prepare students for a variety of careers and positions with media companies. Our Strategic Communication concentration helps to prepare students for a variety of careers in advertising and public relations fields. In conjunction with specializing in one of these areas, each major is required to take at least one course in writing for the media, along with courses that explore ethics and multimedia and visual communication. Students must complete at least one of the following sequences below. (Students who enrolled before the fall 2010 semester are encouraged but not required to switch to the multimedia journalism concentration. Students who enrolled before the fall 2011 semester are encouraged but not required to switch to the strategic communication concentration. For those students only, please visit with the C&J adviser.) Advisement and Program Information Program Advisement: Students must choose from one of two concentrations:
Multimedia Journalism or Strategic Communication. A major requires 36 hours of course work which include
15 hours in core courses listed below, 12 hours in the selected emphasis area, and 9 hours of C&J
electives from the list below or from courses from another concentration with C&J adviser approval.
STAT 145 — Introduction to Statistics is the required Math course for this major and will also apply to
A&S Math core and group requirements. A 2.5 grade point average is required for admission into the program.
Students who declare a minor in Journalism must take 21 credit hours of
C&J department courses, which must include the following:
