UNM Lobo Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism

Program Overview

The Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of New Mexico offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Journalism through the College of Arts and Sciences. Our program helps to prepare students for a variety of careers including journalism, broadcasting, and positions with other media companies. Students work in one of two professional sequences suitable to their interests and goals. In conjunction with specializing in one of these areas, each major is required to take at least two courses in writing for the media, along with courses that explore mass media law, ethics and either visual communication or mass communication theory and effects. Students must complete at least one of the following concentrations below:

Print Journalism - Students in this track take courses in copy editing, intermediate reporting, and advanced reporting. Copy editing instruction provides practice in editing and presenting news copy by headlines, typography, and page makeup. Intermediate reporting emphasizes the reporting of complex affairs, the news feature story, and the development and coverage of beats. Advanced reporting focuses on interpretive and in-depth writing on public affairs.

Broadcast Journalism - This sequence provides instruction in the gathering and reporting of news for television. Students first learn the basics of shooting and editing videotape, writing to picture, as well as writing, producing, and anchoring short news programs. In a subsequent course, students create longer, more elaborate programs with their own documentary segments, essays, and in-studio interviews. For a final course, students choose one of the following: advanced reporting, telecommunications, or station operations.
