Undergraduate Internships

ARCA Foundation

Fall or Spring Internship involved in Marketing; Communications; Public Relations; Fundraising; and Special Events. ARCA, a non-profit corporation that has been caring for people with developmental disabilities since 1957, is seeking a creative, enthusiastic, hard-working individual to assist in its marketing, public relations and fundraising activities.

BSMG PR Firm

Test your PR and communications skills by entering this firm's contest, sponsored by BSMG Worldwide. You could win $5,000 and a paid internship at the firm. It is a three-month paid internship and there is an all-expenses paid trip to the annual PRWEEK Awards in New York. Two runners-up will receive a $1,000 cash prize and a paid internship with BSMG.

Center for Autonomous Control Engineering

An editorial position is available for its newsletter. ACE is part of an established research group including many other universities and NASA. Periodically, newsletters are published to update the research and academic communities on current research and other events.This is an opportunity to gain experience in many aspects of journalism with freedom for creative presentation of technical features.

Channel 27

Internships are frequently available at Channel 27, the Public Access TV station for Albuquerque.
  1. Production Internship: Production crew for a sports program on soccer sponsored by the new soccer program in Albuquerque-Umbro Elite FC. Interns will have their production training paid for in both studio and field production. The interns will be required to videotape soccer games and aid in the process of producing instructional soccer videos. Interns do not need extensive prior production experience.   2. Master Control Internship: Under the supervision of the Director of Operations, the master control intern will be responsible for switching among live, taped and satellite feeds. Also for playback and monitoring of live and taped programs on Community Cable Channel 27. Interns will use video and studio playback equipment, character generator, videotape editors and switchers as needed. The interns will continuously monitor programming for proper audio and video levels, make real time programming decisions and log program data.   3. Promotions/Publications Internship: Intern will be responsible for e-mailing the programming schedule to TV Guide Channel 6, editing written descriptions for publication in monthly program guide and writing two short feature stories spotlighting volunteer producers. City of Roswell
The Beautification Department is looking for a 'Keep Roswell Beautiful' public relations intern starting March 22, 2001. This is a temporary full-time position. Deadline to submit the required application is April 11, 2001. This is the beginning level of our public relations work assisting in the coordination of public relations information. The intern will: (1) assist in the preparation of press releases for use by the local media; (2) distribute press releases to media; (3) assist in preparation of weekly lists of City meeting for the media, and (4) research answers to questions asked by the media or public. Applicant would be btween 18-26 and have at least one year of college-level course work in Public Relations, Mass Communications, Journalism or in a closely related field.

Fancy Publications Inc., in Southern California, offers paid summer internships in magazine editing. In addition to the opportunity to develop professional level skills and experience editing one or more of the company's 45 consumer and trade magazines, the Shattuck Fellowship Program is designed to give interns a comprehensive understanding of magazine publishing and the editorial process.

Fean Magazine

Editorial Intern for 15 to 20 hours per week at the Santa Fean Magazine in Santa Fe, N.M., doing research, fact checking, phone research, and proofing. Some writing possible.Opportunity to get experience with a national magazine of Southwest art, culture, lifestyle, literature, and travel.

Florida Times-Union

This summer 2000 internship program in copy editing, photography and writing extends through the summer months, and exact dates of employment will be negotiated. You may expect to be in the program for about 12 weeks. Interns will work as regular staffers. Meetings will be held with various editors to discuss problems and progress.

G & G Advertising

GenderPAC is now accepting applications for internships in the Washington, DC office. Internships are available in the following areas: 1) Administrative and Accounting, 2) News Media/Electronic Mail/Communications, 3) Field organizing with Campus and State Coordinators, 4) Managing special events and conferences, and 5) Legislative and Political.

Honolulu Advertiser

Interns work for at least 10 weeks during the summer in the newsroom for 37.5 hours a week and may specialize in reporting, photography, copy editing, graphics/page design or online/new media. Applications must be postmarked by the end of the year.

Interlochen Center for the Arts

Work at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in northwest lower Michigan in the summer. Interlochen summer programs include: summer photographer, public relations, marketing and graphic design internships

Kirtland Air Force Base

A position is available at Kirtland Air Force Base Field Command, Special Weapons Agency. Person will perform diversified work assignments related to the field of Journalism. The position entails writing, editing, research, administrative and technical work.

Nahalat Shalom Jewish Congregation

The intern could work as a program assistant and help with art, music, theater, youth programs, and/or special events. The focus would be in organizational communication or public relations.

NASA Dryden Flight Research Center

NASA Dryden Flight Research Center has currently finalized the first selection of Co-op journalism students for 2001 Spring/Summer term, and it was just approved to bring in several more students. Interested students must drop off resume and transcripts to UNM Career Services.

New Mexico Legislature

Students interested in working as an intern for Sen. Cisco McSorley during this year's session of the New Mexico Legislature should contact Prof. Richard Schaefer at 277-9556, 843-7485 or at schaefer@unm.edu. Neighbor to Neighbor Political Organizer

Founded in 1985, Neighbor to Neighbor's mission is to help build a political grassroots democracy movement of low-income and people of color to increase social and economic equity. Neighbor to Neighbor carries out its mission through grassroots organizing, lobbying, and by running media and election campaigns on behalf of human rights in the United States and abroad.

Neogenesis Media

Neogenesis media is soliciting interns for spring 2000, to assist with the completion of its digital film project, Chasing Democracy. These internships are for highly motivated students nearing the end of their studies and desiring experience in a real-world production environment assisting with producing the final shoots & post-production phase necessary to complete the documentary.

Nob Hill Business Association

The association is busy this spring with the Route 66 Jubilee and needs a communication person to help promote and organize the activities.

Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper

The Plain Dealer, Ohio's largest newspaper, is looking for 16 interns to come work in its newsroom during the summer. The newspaper offers internships in metro, features, business, sports, photo, graphics and the copy desk. Internships are open to college juniors, seniors and graduate students, including May grads. 

Photography magazines

CameraArts and View Camera magazines are two bi-monthly photography magazines with an international circulation. They are looking for an intern 8-16 hours a week for the remainder of the school year. The position can be paid. This is an opportunity for someone to learn all phases of the magazine publishing business. The job is in Corrales.

Population Fellows Program

The Population Fellows Program, administered by the University of Michigan School of Public Health, is offering paid internships for the Summer available for all majors. Interns are placed with U.S- based organizations that work worldwide in helping countries manage their population growth and its impact on the environment, economy, and social services.

Porter Novelli Summer Internship Program

Tthe Porter Novelli Summer Internship Program offers opportunities in public relations. Interns will be involved in writing letters and press releases, developing media lists, pitching the media, assisting in coordinating special events and providing account team support.

Poynter Fellowship Programs

From June 7- July 19, 2002, outstanding college students will participate in two Poynter fellowship programs in St. Petersburg, Fla. Women and members of racial and ethnic minority groups are especially encouraged to apply.
  • News Reporting & Writing Fellowship for College Graduates
    Students learn to originate stories in a town they barely know, to sell stories to editors, and to gather and convey information in a hurry. They will also discuss graphics, libel, ethics, and what we call "managing up," or how to work effectively with editors. Sixteen graduating seniors will be selected.
    Application Deadline: November 15, 2001
  • Visual Journalism Fellowship for College Graduates
    Students will study type, color, and architecture for news and feature page design; information graphics; traditional and photo illustraton; documentary photojournalism; online design and interactivity. Sixteen students or recent graduates will be selected.

Reporter's Committee

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press is looking for highly motivated full-time interns. Interns will report, write and edit stories for The News Media & Law, a quarterly magazine, and News Media Update, a bi-weekly newsletter. The Reporters Committee is a voluntary, unincorporated association of reporters and editors dedicated to protecting the First Amendment interests of the news media.

Rick Johnson & Company

These internships allow students more hands on experience in the area of advertising and public relations. This program is comprised of three distinct elements: (1) Real World 101: Hands on Experience in Marketing and Advertising, (2) This is an Advertising Company: Internship Classes, and (3) Where Can I Go From Here? Communications Field Trips. A variety of internships are available: account services, public relations, multi-media marketing, television and radio production, media promotions, and creative.

Sports Journalism Institute

The Sports Journalism Institute is a scholarship-internship program designed to increase the numbers of women and minorities in newspaper sports departments. Students chosen for the program will receive an expense-paid trip to Baltimore to attend classes, then go on to placement in a paid internship at a daily newspaper, most likely in the sports department. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to each student upon successful completion of the internship. This multi-cultural program is aimed at college juniors (though sophomores are eligible) and is coordinated by Associated Press Sports Editors and the National Association of Black Journalists. Ideal candidates will have some print experience and some sports knowledge or interest.

Su Casa magazine

The magazine based in Santa Fe, N.M., seeks an editorial intern to copy edit and proofread articles, and assist with other general editorial duties, including correspondence with free-lance writers and photographers, minor fact-checking, and research. The intern will report to Charles Poling, editor and associate publisher. The intern would preferably start mid-April and continue through late August. A copy of the magazine is in the C&J Office.

Susan's Legacy

Susan's Legacy is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a residential treatment center for women who suffer from a diagnosed mental illness and substance abuse. Currently its efforts are focusing on finding a appropriate facility and achieving funding. This position would assist the Executive Director with correspondence, entering data into fundraising mailing list, and assist with development and production of an organizational newsletter and other fundraising efforts.

TVI Communication/PR Intern

The intern will assist the communications manager and the communications officer in planning, coordinating and implementing special events including open houses and grand openings. The intern will also write press releases, advisories and newsletter stories; update media list; establish media contacts; manage clippings file as well as other work-in-progress files. The intern will assist the Public Information Office with any task associated with public relations/marketing.

UCG - United Communications Group

UCG, a business newsletter publisher, offers students an internship that exposes them to a medium different from traditional magazines and newspapers. For more information, contact Dan Brown.

Project Vote Smart
From the Project's new facility, nestled in the Montana Pintlar Wilderness, interns experience the meeting of Wild West and World Wide Web. The focus of this 10-week internship is to provide practical, hands-on experience. Interns can gain experience in fundraising, research and communications.

Warren Communications News

Warren Communications News, an independent firm publishing more than a dozen business newsletters and electronic news services covering the telecommunications and Internet industries, is offering journalism internships, both during the school year and for the summer. Depending on their ability, interns in the past have filled in for staff reporters, covered news conferences, interviewed news sources and written initiative-based enterprise stories. The successful applicant will be a junior or senior, preferably enrolled in a college journalism program or actively involved in student journalism. Women's Community Association

This position would support the association's Marketing and Development Coordinator. Duties would include: media relations, developing promotional materials, helping to organize and run fundraising events, presentations, etc. Internship commitment is for six months.


Graduate Internships

Educational Testing Center

Graduate students in this summer eight-week program participate in research under the guidance of a senior ETS staff member in one of the following areas: psychology; education; teaching; learning; psychometrics; statistics; literacy; policy research; computer science; linguistics; psycholinguistics; educational technology; minority issues; testing issues, including alternate forms of assessment for special populations and new forms of assessment. Internships are offered to graduate students who are currently enrolled in a doctorate program, and have completed a minimum of one year of full-time graduate study in the program emphasizing one of the areas specified above. Each graduate intern will receive $3,500.

Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

A two-year qualitative research project is investigating the links between drinking and sexual risks among Hispanic undergraduate college students. As part of this investigation positions are available for graduate students who wish to work 20 hours a week.
