The student chapter of the American Advertising
Federation in the C&J Department formed a student-run ad
agency in August 2007. Lobo Edge Advertising, the new agency’s
name, takes on local clients creating ad campaigns, designing
and executing traditional and non-traditional ads and Web site
design. The agency has four clients.
One is the nonprofit New Mexico Recycling Coalition,
which is partnering with Mayor Martin Chávez on a campaign
for recycling. The theme is how easy and important recycling
is to lessen carbon footprint/greenhouse gasses/global warming.
PSAs have already run on the radio (Citadel and Univision) and
outdoor billboards with Clear Channel.
C&J Associate Professor Glenda Balas and
her student, Joe Kelly, were first approached about filming
the PSA. They teamed up with Lobo Edge, along with its co-adviser,
C&J Lecturer II Karolyn Cannata-Winge, to work on the TV
PSA.
A team of five Lobo Edge members (Laura Favour,
Rose Garcia, Michael Green, Lorena Ontiveros and Stephanie Cisneros)
wrote four new 30-second PSA scripts, complete with storyboards.
Cannata-Winge was the script editor. The students pitched the
scripts to Sarah Pierpont, CFRP project coordinator, in late
October. Pierpont selected one script, which included Mayor
Martin Chávez. Balas was the spot’s producer, and
Kelly shot and edited the PSA.
The students and two faculty members went to
the UNM Children’s Campus to film Chávez doing
his voice-over and interacting with children for the spot in
mid-November. C&J graduater student T.J. Martinez documented
the shoot for the department.
Pierpont commented that the filming worked
out well, and the Lobo Edge students, “are great, and
the work they've done on the campaign is incredibly creative,
professional and upbeat.” The PSA aired on several local
TV stations in December 2007.
