C&J
Needs
The
Department of Communication and Journalism is currently seeking
individual, corporate and endowment donations that support the
following needs:
| Facilities and Capital Improvements |
Our
most pressing and immediate concern is the deteriorated condition
of the Communication and Journalism building at the corner of
Central and Yale. Designed by the famous Southwest architect John
Gaw Meem, the exterior of the 57-year-old building is an attractive
anchor of the university's southern entrance. However, the exterior
is dilapidated and much of its interior space is at present not
available for C&J use. The university has approved plans for
a major interior renovation that will provide more efficient use
of space, additional classrooms, a second computer lab, and replacement
of the building's plumbing, heating, electrical, cooling and digital
technology systems. A summary of the project is available in a
PDF of the department's latest newsletter, which can be downloaded here.
There is a great need for donors to come to the aid of the department
building's condition to ensure that this renovation will be as
complete as possible. Opportunities are available for classrooms,
computer laboratories and even the entire building
to be named in honor of donors. Please contact us if you are interested.
While funds provided by the university will get us started
on the renovation, we'll always need your support to be able to
afford to continue giving our students the best technological resources.
For more information on how you can help, please contact the department's
chair, John
G. Oetzel.

Scholarship Support |
Most of the department's approximately 625 students rely on scholarship
monies to work toward their B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. This
support is especially critical in New Mexico, where the cost of
a university education is often beyond the reach of many families
and students. You can help ensure the education of a needy student,
and therefore the future of all of us, by providing a named scholarship
or by donating to our general scholarship fund. For more information
on how you can help, please contact the department's chair, John
G. Oetzel.
For a sampling of some of our many existing scholarships, please
visit our department's scholarship page.
The Communication and Journalism faculty is consistently recognized
nationally for excellence in teaching, publication and service.
However, the salaries are well below national averages for our
peer institutions, which is often a great challenge in attracting
and keeping faculty at the university. The department relies on
the generosity of donors to support academic research and travel.
For more information on how you can help, please contact the department's
chair, John
G. Oetzel.

projects and interests by visiting the department's faculty page.

It will come as no surprise that our M.A. and Ph.D. students
in communication are always in needs of financial assistance. If
you are one of our many graduate alums, you can remember your own
days of scrambling for the next scholarship, grant or fellowship
so that you could continue your research the travel needed to complete
it. You can help our current grad students by donating directly
to a scholarship set up to honor the memory of the late Professor
Everett M. Rogers. The scholarship, known as the "Everett
M. Rogers Memorial Scholarship," will be
awarded to graduate students for such things as travel to conferences,
tuition and research funding. For more information about this scholarship
and how you can donate to it, please link to the C&J
scholarships page.
