Journalism 

Research:

Media management issues related to consolidation, circulation, ownership, media economics, convergence and entrepreneurship. Also, Native American communities along the Rio Grande in central New Mexico in the 16th century.

I am working on (or just finished) three projects:

  •  A historical novel, Winter of the Metal People: The Tiguex War, to be published by Gibbs Smith Publisher.
  •  A chapter titled "The Tiguex War in Facts, Folklore and Fiction,” for a forthcoming book on the Coronado Expedition to be published in 2010 by UNM Press.
  •  A second edition of my 2003 textbook, Media Management in the Age of Giants: Business Dynamics of Journalism, published by Blackwell Publishing.

Teaching:

I teach or have taught a variety of courses in the journalism sequence, including: CJ 271-Writing for Print Journalism; CJ 371-Persuasive Writing; CJ 372-Copy Editing and Layout; CJ 374-Desktop Publishing; CJ 375-Multimedia Journalism/Intermediate Reporting; CJ 376-Media Management; CJ 465-Mass Communication Ethics; CJ 475-Multimedia Journalism/Advanced Reporting (all at the University of New Mexico), as well as Specialized Reporting and Writing (University of Iowa).

I am also committed to serving students outside the classroom. Most semesters I work with students in independent studies, and I am chair of the Undergraduate Journalism Committee.

Service:

  • Editor of the departmental newsletter.
