Health communication, prevention research, Internet-based interventions, communication strategies for substance abuse and cancer prevention, nonverbal communication, information processing and social cognition, program evaluation research, comprehension of television news, quantitative research methods, philosophy of science and communication theory.

Projects and collaborations: In alcohol and substance abuse prevention, I am involved in several projects currently: 1) The San Juan County DWI Treatment Center Evaluation project, funded by NIAAA, to comprehensively evaluate a DWI incarceration and treatment center over five years,   2) Responsible Beverage Service approach to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Prevention, a project funded by NIAAA, that employs RBS practices that focus on serving alcohol to women of child-bearing age as a way to reduce FAS;   3)   The Website to Prevent Risky College Student Alcohol Consumption, funded by NIAAA, which will systematically develop a comprehensive alcohol prevention website intervention for University students, and will conduct a randomized trial of the website;   4) The Responsible Beverage Service Training Website project, funded by NIAAA, that will systematically develop an interactive RBS training website for on-premise servers, and will conduct a randomized trial of the website;   5) Project ALERT, funded by a subcontract from the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, which will conduct an effectiveness and implementation trial of the ALERT substance abuse prevention curriculum for middle school students;   In cancer prevention, I am involved in four projects currently: 1) an Internet website intervention to reduce tobacco uptake among adolescents; 2) an Internet website intervention to impact dietary behaviors among Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado residents;   3) an evaluation of a sun safety and skin cancer prevention curriculum for adolescents; and 4) I serve as an consultant on a project that will design a comprehensive tobacco cessation website for young adults of University age.

Methods: He no longer teaches in the department, devoting all of his time instead to funded research at UNM's Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, and Addictions.

Spare Time: He spends as much of it as possible with his family.
