The C&J department offers students from the various curriculum tracks the opportunity to apply for any number of scholarships or financial awards.

Scholarship Awards
Each year about a dozen C&J students are recipients of the New Mexico Broadcasters Association scholarship for a grand total of $10,500. For information, contact the C&J office staff.


C&J Departmental Scholarships
The following are C&J Departmental Scholarships for which you can apply. Fill out the departmental form and return it to the main office (C&J Building, Room 235) by April 1. The Scholarship Review Committee meets and makes the final recipients selection and award recommendations.

Office of Graduate Studies Fellowships
The Office of International Programs and Studies is offering the Fulbright Scholarship to graduate students and seniors to support their study, research or teaching overseas. This applies to any field, anywhere.

The University of New Mexico has three major scholarship functions available to serve a wide variety of students.
  • Institutional Scholarships
    These apply to both resident, non-resident and international students and include, but are not limited to: the Regents', Presidential, UNM Scholars, Omega, PACE, Transfer Scholarships, NM Scholars and Amigo.
  • Departmental Scholarships
    These are selected at the department levels, but the actual student awarding and administration is handled within this office.
  • Outside and Private Scholarships
    These include hundreds of programs which flow through our process.

  • Albuquerque Journal - C.T. Lang Scholarship
    • Description
      The Albuquerque Journal announces its C.T. Lang Journalism Scholarships. Scholarships will be awarded to full-time students with bachelor programs in news writing, photography, design, and copy editing. Competition is open to juniors and seniors in Print Journalism Sequence only.
    • Award
      Scholarships worth $2,000 ($1,000 per semester) are awarded to one student.
    • Frequency
      This scholarship is awarded every year.
    • Undergraduate/Graduate?
      Only undergraduate students can apply for this scholarship.
    • GPA
      GPA must be 3.0 or more.
    • Application Requirements
      Applicants should submit: (1) an application, (2) a grade transcript, (3) a letter of recommendation from a journalism faculty member, (4) three samples of writing (five published pictures for photo students). School publications are acceptable, and (5) a short biographical sketch and education resume also are needed.

  • Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program
    This program supports post-baccalaureate study for Fellows from Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and Russia. The IFP will award 350 new graduate fellowships annually, assisting a total of 3,500 Fellows over the next decade. The graduate fellowships will support up to three years of master's or doctoral study at universities anywhere in the world. Fellows will be selected on the basis of their leadership potential, academic excellence and commitment to community or national development. They may pursue their studies in any fields that further the Ford Foundation's goals of strengthening democratic values, reducing poverty and injustice, promoting international cooperation and advancing human achievement.

  • Freedom Forum
    The Chips Quinn School Year Program for Minorities in Journalism offers valuable training, paid internships and $1,000 awards to college juniors, seniors and recent graduates of color who are interested in pursuing careers in print journalism. The fall program begins with a week-long orientation in Washington,
    D.C. followed by a 10- or 12-week internship. Scholars must be nominated by journalism faculty, campus media advisers or newspaper editors. Pick up applications at the C&J Office or visit their Web site. Check the site for the April deadline for nominations and applications for the fall programs.

  • Gannett's Pulliam Journalism Fellowship
    This is an opportunity for 20 men and women to polish their journalism skills. Fellows work as staff reporters for the The Indianapolis Star or The Arizona Republic.
    • Terms of the Fellowship:
      The 2001 program will run from June 11 through August 17. Each Fellow will receive a stipend of $5,775, with one-third to be paid on receipt of a letter of intent and the remainder distributed during the Fellowship.
    • Eligibility:
      Applications are invited from students who are college sophomores, juniors or seniors and who are newspaper journalism or liberal arts majors with newspaper experience.
    • To Qualify:
      Applicants must show they have a commitment to newspaper journalism as a career; must have an understanding of the social and economic roles of a free press; must have proven potential in reporting, writing and editing; must have personal integrity and maturity; and must give evidence of ability to work effectively with others under pressure.
    • How to Apply:
      Send a completed application form; samples of the applicant's best published writing (from 5 to 15 samples, each a maximum of 3,000 words); college grade transcripts; a recent photograph for publicity purposes; three letters of recommendation; and a 400- to 600-word editorial on any subject, written expressly for this competition.

  • Gates Millennium Scholars
    This program is aimed at increasing the number of low-income African Americans, Asian Pacific Americans, American Indians/Alaska Natives and Hispanic Americans enrolling in and completing undergraduate and graduate degree programs. See our board for the prospectus and pick up additional information at the front office. The application deadline is in March.

  • International Youth in Action and the Global Youth Action Network
    We are offering $1,000US awards to young people (under 25) who have started a project anywhere in the world that has positively impacted their community. UNESCO's InfoYOUTH Network and Prodigy Internet have offered funds for these awards, which aim to provide greater recognition for young people's positive contributions. To learn more or apply for an award, click here. Only youth-initiated projects that are on-going or completed and have created a measurable and positive result are eligible.   • W.R. Hearst Foundation Journalism Awards Program
    This year marks the 42nd annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program, beginning this October. You can participate in Hearst's print, photojournalism and broadcast news competitions. The program picks multiple winners across all categories and finalists can be rewarded by receiving either awards, scholarships, championship awards or intercollegiate competition awards.   • American Association of University Women
    Outstanding women scholars in arts and sciences are invited to apply for a one-year research fellowship or short-term publication grant from the AAUW Educational Foundation. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Funds are available for:
    • Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowship
      * $27,000 is available to women who will have earned a doctoral degree by November 15.
      * Limited additional postdoctoral support may be available when matched by the fellow's institution.
    • Dissertation Fellowship
      * $15,000 is available to women in the final year of a doctoral degree program and who will complete dissertations by June 30, 2002.

      * Support for all fields of study except engineering. Scholars researching gender issues are encouraged to apply.
    • Summer/Short-term Research Publication Grant
      * $5,775 is available to women, college/university faculty, or independent researchers to prepare completed research for publication.

  • American School Health Association
    Every fall, the American School Health Association awards three scholarships of $500 each to juniors, seniors or graduate students whose academic and professional goals include the health of youth. For more information or to obtain an application for the ASHA Scholarship, visit their website. Check website for April application deadline.

  • Broadcast Education Association
    The Broadcast Education Association administers 31 prestigious national scholarships awarded to students preparing for electronic media careers. Funded by major media corporations and leaders, these scholarships can be used to pursue electronic media studies at any BEA-member campus. Most of these grants are available for junior year, senior year, or graduate study. Two are reserved exclusively for students attending two-year schools.

    Scholarships will be awarded for full-time degree work for the full academic year. Scholarships must be used exclusively for tuition, student fees, university book store course purchases, and university dormitory room and board.

    The applicant should be able to show substantial evidence of superior academic performance and potential to be an outstanding electronic media professional. There should be compelling evidence that the applicant possesses high integrity and a well-articulated sense of personal and professional responsibility.

  • Hank Trewhitt Daily Lobo Alumni Award
    Aggressive, insightful New Mexico Daily Lobo reporters are invited to apply for the Hank Trewhitt Daily Lobo Alumni Award.

    This award recognizes hard-nosed UNM reporters who fight for big stories and write them clearly. No noodle spines. We want initiative-driven reporters who stretch beyond press releases, get that extra source and live on Page 1.


    If that describes you, send your four best Daily Lobo clips, a cover letter and a resume to the Hank Trewhitt Daily Lobo Alumni Award, UNM Student Publications, Marron Hall, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM 87131.

    The award was created to honor Trewhitt, a member of UNM's first journalism class and former Lobo editor whose reporting career spanned more than a hundred countries and included a stint as a White House correspondent during Watergate. He returned to UNM in 1989 and mentored students until his death in 2003.

    The deadline is Friday, March 31, 2006. No exceptions will be granted, and the $500 award winner will be announced in late April. The award committee reserves the right to not select a winner.

  • National Speakers Association
    The NSA will award four $4,000 scholarships in 2001 to junior, senior or graduate students majoring or minoring in speech. See the C&J board for the prospectus and pick up the application materials (due between May 1-June 1) at the front office. To see if you qualify, visit their Web site.

  • New Mexico Broadcasters Association
    The New Mexico Broadcasters Association will award various scholarships (each up to $2,500) to residents of New Mexico who meet the criteria below. These scholarships will be awarded at the NMBA Annual and must be used during the following school year. The scholarships are for individuals who desire a career in any area of the radio or television broadcast industry, i.e., news, announcing, sales, traffic, programming, public or community affairs, engineering, accounting, management, etc.

    Rules:
    1. Applicant must secure an internship with a New Mexico Broadcast facility, in one of the areas. The NMBA can help you in acquiring an internship.
    2. Student must be a resident of New Mexico.
    3. Student must use the scholarship to attend an accredited college, vocational institution or university in the State of New Mexico.
    4. Scholarship funds are payable directly to the student and may be used to defray the cost of tuition, books, supplies and fees.
    Determination for scholarship:
    1. A letter of recommendation from an appropriate school official, confirming academic achievement and commitment to a broadcasting career is required.
    2. You must be entering your sophomore, junior or senior year.
    3. Completion of application form is required.
    4. A copy of your transcript is required.
    5. Deadline for submitting entries: March 30.

  • New Mexico Press Women
    We are offering two $500 scholarships to male and female students majoring in journalism, broadcasting, photography, graphic art, writing, communication, public relations or advertising. The scholarships will be awarded in April.

    The main criteria for the award is career potential and financial need, although scholastic standing is a consideration. The competition is open to all students. Applicants are required to send samples of their work, proof of financial need, an academic transcript, letters of recommendation, a letter of intent about their career goals, and the application form. Check with organization for March deadline. The application form can be picked up at the C&J office, room 235.

  • Family Pride Coalition and COLAGE (Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere)
    At least four scholarships will be awarded to daughters and sons of LGBT parents through their collaborative Lee Dubbin Scholarship Fund. Each scholarship will provide a minimum of $500 and a maximum of $1,000 of funding for post-secondary students who have a demonstrated ability in and commitment to effecting change in society.   • An Uncommon Legacy Foundation, Inc
    The An Uncommon Legacy Foundation Scholarship is open to lesbian undergraduates and graduates enrolled full-time in an accredited U.S. college or university. Consideration is given to academics, honors, financial need and service to the lesbian/gay community. An essay is required. You can apply online.
