The Mercer Speech Tournament hosted by the C&J Department attracted 24 contestants and an audience of students and faculty members. In the photo, Mrs. Joann Mercer, the tournament's sponsor, stands second from the right with some of the winners after the competition. The winners and their prizes are: First place, $1,000, Bevin Ehn (mass communication/advertising); second place, $750, John McCullough (nuclear engineering); third place, Tracie Lissner (university studies); finalist, $100, Hana Wolf (religious studies); finalist, $100, Brian Ver Pleoux (communication); and finalist, $100, Natalie Klein (mathematics). The tournament is named for Mrs. Mercer's late husband and son, Joe and Steve Mercer. They were politicians and lawyers who believed in the power of speech and debate, and Mrs. Mercer created this tournament to honor their commitments and memory.
