Our “NIRT” (Nanoscale Interdisciplinary Research Team) grant was supported by the National Science Foundation in August 2002, and will extend for four years from that date. In this grant, a team of five University of New Mexico principal investigators will collaboratively explore synthetic strategies, and the accompanying theoretical understanding, for producing microparticles that possess structure, composition, and chemical functionality that are spatially engineered at the nanoscale. The synthetic approach will exploit molecular self assembly within evaporating droplets, coupled with sophisticated surface functionalization. Potential applications include, for example, targeted drug delivery, high-throughput drug screening, highly selective poison-resistant catalysts, and novel media for chromatographic separations.
