Synagogue

Due to the separate living quarters established by the Catholic Church, the ancient Jewish neighborhood can be identified, and an actual synagogue has been found. The synagogue was rather large, consisting not only the room used for worship but also many living quarters as well as many patios. The synagogue was found in 1980 when work was being constructed on a residence close to the plaza. A worker struck a wall and uncovered a rock with a Hebrew inscription, “This is the door of God, the just will enter in it”. This text was typically used in the entrances of Spanish synagogues. This ancient synagogue, although not open for public viewing, is still very much complete, including an ancient well (aljibe) used for cleansing before services. All Jewish people were eventually forced to convert to Catholicism or were expelled from the country, therefore the remaining synagogue is very important to the history of Trujillo. The existence of this synagogue is important in understanding the growth and evolution of Trujillo because it signifies the fact that the Jewish culture was part of the life in this city.
