Computer Instructors

The following is a list of instructors who will be teaching for the Computer Program this semester.

Richard Berg, BA Wesleyan University, Ph.D. University of California at Berkeley. Rick, who has been programming computers since 1968, is a consultant in business applications, specializing in Windows, Access, and Quickbooks. He is a Microsoft Certified Product Specialist.

Jane Betterton, BS in Chemical Engineering, Texas Tech University. Jane has experience managing technical support and marketing at software development companies. For several years she has taught computer classes on a wide variety of products including desktop publishing, word processing, spreadsheets, and project management.

Toni Black, BA in Music Education from University of Colorado and MA in Training and Learning Technologies, UNM. Toni is experienced as a computer instructor, and she spent eight years in computer programming. She specializes in spreadsheets and databases, including advanced functions and programming.

Margo F. Bouchard, BS in Chemistry, Lewis University. Margo is a Microsoft Certified Product Specialist, with an expertise in Microsoft Word. She has experience developing courses, writing manuals, and instructing classes in Windows, Word, and Access.

L. William Bower, MBA, has been developing business ventures since 1976. He works in the private sector doing long-range planning for communications facilities. He has designed computer-based accounting and management information systems for businesses and government. Bill teaches Excel classes.

Mary Dewitt-Byrd, Microsoft Certified Product Specialist in Windows 95 and MS Project. In addition to being a project management specialist, Mary also teaches all of the Microsoft Office 95 and 97 programs. Mary works as a consultant to companies and organizations throughout the southwest and incorporates her many years of office experience into her classes as examples, problems, and solutions.

Joe Calkins, is a computer programmer specializing in Web scripts and macros to automate user applications. He is the Webmaster of an award-winning Website. His primary programming language is PERL, with additional experience in C, Visual Basic, Korn and DOS command shells.

Martin G. Castillo, MA in Human Resources Development. Martin developed Computer-Based Training modules of instruction for the US Air Force. He has been working with Microsoft Office products since 1990 and specializes in Access and Excel.

David Civetti, BBA in Marketing & General Management, Anderson School of Management, University of New Mexico. David specializes in Layout and Production using PageMaker, Illustrator and Photoshop. He works for UNM Continuing Education producing course catalogs, program brochures, ads, flyers, posters, and presentation graphics.

Jim Connolly, BS from Sonoma State University, MS from UNM. Jim manages a Local Area Network (LAN) with the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department at UNM. He teaches Internet, advanced Microsoft Windows, and networking classes.

Joseph Conte, MA in advertising from Michigan State University. Joe has 12 years experience in print communications. He has worked for the Michigan House of Representatives, a public relations firm, and is currently a freelance desktop publisher for Addison Wesley Longman Publishing, Peachpit Press, and Brown Publishing. He is a specialist in QuarkXPress, Illustrator, and Photoshop.

Annette P. Crabtree has 6 years experience as a training instructor and specialist on the Macintosh. She teaches Macintosh operating system and applications including ClarisWorks integrated software, MS Word and QuarkXPress. She owns and operates a word processing and desktop publishing business.

Kevin Curry, BFA in Advertising Design from the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan. After working as a Art Director on the east coast, Kevin became a freelance graphic designer in 1991, producing digital illustration for national and international editorial clients, reports and other corporate collateral pieces. Kevin specializes in Freehand and Photoshop.

Heather S. Davis, BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, ME at Northern Arizona University in Educational Media and Computers. For 14 years, she has taught computer applications in secondary and college classrooms, and corporate training environments. Heather specializes in teaching Microsoft Office, graphics, and Internet classes. In addition, she develops computer-based training programs and web sites.

Paula Eastwood, BFA from Northern Illinois University. Paula is a graphic designer and art director currently working as the art director for a regional magazine following years of experience in New York City. Specialist in QuarkXPress, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Editorial Design.

Diane Follstaedt, BS Computer Engineering, UNM; MS in Education, University of Illinois. Diane has experience in developing instructional materials and instructing classes in Word, Access, and Windows. She does customized training and consulting in Access and Word.

Adele Gangai, BFA in Graphic Design from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Since 1985 Adele has worked for animation studios, advertising agencies and newspapers. She has extensive experience in QuarkXPress, Illustrator, PageMaker, Photoshop, Multi-Ad Creator, and Director. She is currently a freelance graphic designer.

Gathen Garcia, Associate Degree in Applied Science. Specialist in AutoCAD. He has years of professional experience using CAD, and is CAD supervisor for PNM.

David Gifford, BS University of the State of New York at Albany, A+ Certification. Dave has been building and troubleshooting PCs for over 10 years and is currently the Computer Support Chief for the Field Command, Defense Special Weapons Agency of the Air Force.

Greg Gomez, BA in English from UNM. Greg has been working in the computer field since 1980, and as a computer professional since 1993. He has been a Webmaster and Internet specialist since 1995. He currently works as a Webmaster at UNM designing and developing web pages.

Charlotte Green, MST, BS from University of Florida. Specialist in database, word-processing and spreadsheet training.

Robert Greiff, BA in Secondary Education. Specialist in databases and programming languages, including Paradox, Access, and Visual Basic. He is a database consultant, and develops proprietary database programs for UNM departments and business clients.

Laura Gutman, Ph.D. from St. Andrews University, Scotland. Laura is a freelance graphic artist, writer and publisher. She established the desktop publishing department of a large Albuquerque ad agency, and has written, illustrated and published two children’s books. Specialist in graphic design studio and computer classes. Laura is the Computer Program Macintosh Lab Technician.

Martin Haagmans, MA, BA in the Netherlands. Martin is an analyst/programmer for UNM’s Center for Development and Disability and Senior Partner at Data Wizards Computer Consulting, LLC, a Database Design and Programming company. He teaches database and programming classes in Access, Visual Basic, and Access Basic.

Bill Halverson, BS in Business Administration and Micro-Information Management Systems. He has experience installing PC based networks. He develops training programs for maintaining LAN’s and World Wide Web Servers, and specializes in UNIX to Windows NT integration and TCP/IP communications. Bill is a Microsoft Certified System Engineer in NT networking.

Leo Heska, BA in Math Education from Arizona State University. Leo has experience in C++, Pascal, BASIC, and FORTRAN and develops software and hardware systems. He has worked for both small and large companies around the world. He teaches Access, Access Basic, C++, Visual C++, and Java.

Mark Justice Hinton, BA, University of Virginia. Specialist in Windows 95 & 98. Mark also teaches many courses on the World Wide Web. He has taught for UNM Continuing Education since 1988.

Cody Horton, MS in Information Technology Management, Naval Postgraduate School. Cody has over 13 years in technical management, computer training, networking and Internet experience. Cody is a Microsoft Certified Trainer, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), and a Microsoft Certified Product Specialist in Windows 95, NT Networking and the Internet.

Terry Hyrne, BS in Geology, Georgia State University. Master’s Degree student at UNM in Organizational Learning and Instructional Technologies with an emphasis in multimedia instructional design and technologies. Terry designs and develops multimedia presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint. He specializes in Windows, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, and multimedia training.

Loren Kemp, employed by PNM for 28 years as an office manager and special projects manager. Specialist in Windows, Lotus, Excel, PowerPoint, and Quicken.

Leah Kier, BS, Business Management, University of Maryland; graduate coursework at UNM in Organizational Learning and Instructional Technologies. She has 12 years of training experience and is a specialist in curriculum development and is a trainer in Windows, Word, and Excel. Leah is the Manager of the Computer Program.

Marcia Kite, BA in Archaeological Chemistry, Northwestern University; MS in Chemistry, University of New Mexico. Expert in scientific information research and Macintosh applications training. Specialist in the Macintosh operating system and in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Quicken for the Macintosh.

Nicole Kurland, has over 15 years experience in advertising and graphic design. She currently owns her own freelance graphic design company and is Art Director for Indian Artist Magazine. Nicole specializes in QuarkXPress and Illustrator.

Sean Lemons, has a Bachelors degree from Central Missouri State University in graphic design. He has eight years of agency experience in design and production, and is the owner of Lemon Tree Design.

John Mauritz, coursework at New Mexico Tech in Computer Science. John brings over ten years of combined software and network engineering experience to his teaching credentials. He is a Microsoft Certified System Engineer, Microsoft Certified Trainer, Microsoft Product Specialist in Access and AQL Server, and a Certified Netware Engineer.

Adrian Miura, BFA from UNM. Adrian programs interactive courseware using Java, Lingo, Authorware, and C++. He has over nine years in the computer industry and specializes in advanced Adobe Photoshop, multimedia and internet classes.

Eddie Moore, Associate Degree of Specialized Technology in Electronics/Computer Engineering from ITT Technical Institute. Eddie is experienced in installing PC-based networks. He is a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, and a Microsoft Certified Product Specialist in Windows NT Workstation, Server and Exchange Server.

Caroline Orcutt, MA in Art from UNM. Caroline has 21 years experience in advertising and editorial graphic design. She owns and operates her own graphic design business, and is a specialist in design and computer graphics classes. Caroline is the Graphic Design and Production Certificate Program Coordinator and Advisor.

James Parker, MA in Economics, New Mexico State University. Analyst Programmer on mainframe and PC applications at UNM. Jim is a Certified Novell NetWare Engineer and teaches networking classes. He is also a database specialist in Access.

Amy Plont, AA in Accounting from TVI. She has 5 years experience in the computer industry including technical support for Albuquerque Public Schools. Amy specializes in Windows and Excel training and is the Lab Technician for the Computer Program.

Greg Scott, is a nationally published graphic designer and illustrator, and former art director for the New York Times and Rolling Stone magazine. He specializes in PageMaker and QuarkXPress.

Donald Shirah, BS in Computer Science from the University of Maryland. Don brings 12 years experience as a systems programmer and trainer with extensive experience in networking and PC solutions. He is a Microsoft Certified System Engineer, Microsoft Certified Solution Developer, Microsoft Certified Trainer, and a Microsoft Product Specialist.

René E. Smeraglia, BA in History, Westminster College in Missouri. Specialist on the Internet and Microsoft Word for Windows. He has conducted training for National Seminars Group, as well as regional forums. René writes articles on computers and the Internet for Computer Scene Magazine, and is co-founder of a training firm in Albuquerque.

Sharlene Stein, MA in Mathematics from the University of Illinois; BA in Mathematics from Roosevelt University in Chicago. Sharlene has been working with computers since 1968 when she was a system engineer with IBM. Currently she is a consultant and trainer supporting popular business and personal software used on PCs. She specializes in Windows 95, Word, Excel, Access, and Project Management.
