5362 Introduction to Computer Graphics

Get your bearings in the wide-ranging field of computer graphics with this introductory course. We’ll learn about all the different kinds of computer graphics (from pixels to postscript!), and sample a range of graphics programs. Class will cover basics like raster vs. vector art, file formats, common interface elements, and building a graphics vocabulary. Class exercises will include simple illustrations and chances to try out various leading software packages (including Illustrator and Photoshop). Information in this class is not platform-specific. This course is suitable for both PC and Mac users. Prerequisite: Beginning Windows 95 (5305) .

Learn to use PowerPoint for Office 97 as an authoring tool to create user interactive and self-running multimedia presentations that include text, clipart and photos, sound, animation effects, and video. This 16-hour course will teach you how to create special text build effects, apply animation effects to slide objects, record and insert your own voice narrations, add presentation background music, and insert video clips. You will create hypertext links and action buttons to add user interactivity to a presentation as well as add slide timings to create a self-running presentation. This course is suitable for both PC and Mac users.Prerequisite: Beginning Windows 95 (5305) and Beginning PowerPoint for Office 97 (5790/5390). Students should have some word processing experience.

This 12-hour course introduces the basics of how PageMaker allows the user total control over both graphics and text on the page. Topics covered include: text and drawing tools, the control palette, story editor, and the basics of importing and formatting text. PageMaker’s new "frames" feature will be included. Principles of effective page layout and design are covered as students work on class projects. This course is suitable for both PC and Mac users. Prerequisite: Beginning Windows 95 (5305) . 5371 Intermediate PageMaker (6.5) for Windows 95

Learning these intermediate features of PageMaker can simplify and automate much of the design effort for creating attractive documents. This 12-hour course teaches the user how to import graphics and assign text wrap and flow options to create layouts. In addition, using pull-quotes and drop caps, creating styles to format text, setting tabs and indents, using the master pages, and automatic page numbering are also covered. Students will complete a newsletter in class using imported text and graphics. This course is suitable for both PC and Mac users. Prerequisite: Beginning PageMaker (5370/5170).

QuarkXPress is a highly versatile page layout program catering to creativity and precision. Topics covered include: sizing and styling text, moving and linking text, and the measurements palette for quick changes. Drawing tools will be utilized to create and modify simple graphic elements. 5385 Beginning Adobe Photoshop (4.0) for Windows 95

Whether you are a computer illustrator, designer or desktop publisher, Photoshop is the premiere image-editing program available today. With Photoshop you can do everything from color-correcting scanned photographs to photographic retouching, and from collage work to creating original illustrations. This 12-hour course covers: an overview of Photoshop basics and the Photoshop toolbox, manipulating selections and selection channels, using the painting tools, working with line art, tools and techniques for grayscale color correction and photo retouching. We also take an in-depth look at the process of digitizing images, from scanning to color-correction, halftoning, output and printing. This course is suitable for both PC and Mac users. Prerequisite: Introduction to Computer Graphics (5362/5162). Recommended: Photography as a Design Tool (2401).

5386 Intermediate Adobe Photoshop (4.0) for Windows 95

Building on the foundation skills learned in the previous class, this 12-hour course looks extensively at techniques for working with color in Photoshop, including monitor calibration for color printing, color correction in CMYK photographs, changing color modes, duotoning, and extensive work with channels. Class also includes work with masks and layers, using textures and gradients, and an in-depth look at painting tools and techniques (custom brushes, paint modes, paint options). Photoshop can be an overwhelming program. Our emphasis will be on not only learning the program features, but putting them to use in an efficient, understandable way. This course is suitable for both PC and Mac users. Prerequisite: Beginning Adobe Photoshop (5185/5385).
