UNM Continuing Education NON-CREDIT courses are open to the general public, and to all adults (18 years and older unless otherwise noted) who can profit from the instruction provided, regardless of educational background. Classes for children are open to the ages noted in each course description.
The registration process is on-going during the semester. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of pre-registering for our courses. In order for us to hold a course we must first meet registration minimums. If you don't want to see your course cancelled, don't wait until the day of the class to register. Guarantee yourself a space in the course of your choice by registering early.
When registering through one of our many non-credit Registration processes, you will need to complete the Registration Form on page 214. To make this process as easy as possible, please complete ALL information which is requested, especially the COURSE I.D. NUMBER, SECTION LETTER, FEE AND CLASS TITLE. Please refer to the sample Registration Form on the following page. The Course I.D. number indicates the class you are interested in taking. The Section letter indicates the date and time of your selected class; many classes offer a variety of options for dates and times. If a class only offers one option in date and time, section letter "A" should be indicated.
Registration begins December 8. Registrations received by mail will be processed upon receipt. Please use the Registration Form on page 214. To ensure that your registration is processed quickly and accurately, provide all information requested, including course number and section.
Mail your registration with payment to: The University of New Mexico, Division of Continuing Education, Registration Department, 1634 University Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87131-4006.
Payment should be made by check or money order for the full tuition to UNM Continuing Education. Or you may charge courses to MasterCard or VISA by filling in the card number, expiration date, and signature lines on the registration form. If your place of employment is paying for your class, please include with the registration form all necessary paperwork, such as the Purchase Order, or Tuition Remission Form. Do not send cash.
Be sure to include both daytime and evening telephone numbers; if the course you selected is cancelled or filled, we will call you for instruction. You are notified by mail of the location of your class.
If you have a MasterCard or VISA credit card, Tuition Remission Form, or Purchase Order you can register by FAX beginning December 8. Complete the Registration Form on page 214 and FAX it along with necessary paperwork to (505) 277-1990. Note: For FAX clarity, type or print your registration information.
If you have a MasterCard or VISA credit card you may register via telephone by calling 277-0077. Please give the course number and section when you register. Phone-in registration will begin December 8.
In-person registration for non-credit courses is held at the UNM Continuing Education Conference Center, 1634 University Blvd. NE (north of Indian School). In-person registration will begin December 8. Please refer to our Office Hours for regular and extended hours.
When you enroll in a non-credit class by phone, FAX or mail, we will send you an enrollment confirmation card. If you enroll in person, you will receive your enrollment confirmation at that time. We will notify you if there are any changes in the date or location of the course, or if for any reason we must reschedule or cancel it. Please include your daytime phone on your registration form, so that we may contact you if necessary.
Note: If your enrollment confirmation doesn't arrive, check with us by calling (505) 277-0077 during office hours to be sure that your course is not full, that it will meet as scheduled, and to confirm that you are registered.
Organizations sending three or more people to a non-credit class/program can take advantage of a 10% discount on the course fee. (This does not apply to Customized Training Programs.) Any individual registering for three or more Computer or Professional Development courses is eligible to receive a 10% discount on the total fee. Any individual registering for four or more Personal Enrichment courses is eligible to receive a 5% discount on the total fee. (This does not apply to classes with a tuition of $20 or less.) To be eligible for this discount, the registration/enrollments must be received by UNM Continuing Education at the same time. This discount does not apply when another discount is applicable.
These discounts are not cumulative, and are only available at the time of payment.
Senior Citizens age 65 or older are eligible to receive a $10 discount on tuition for each class, with a minimum tuition of $20 per class. For Personal Enrichment Programs, one senior per class may take advantage of a TUITION FREE policy. This policy states that after the minimum required enrollment as determined by the Division for each class is met, one tuition-free space will be held for seniors on a first-come, first-served basis. There are some classes which are not eligible for the free spaces. Please check with our Registration staff for details. Persons wishing to register for these tuition-free spaces need to apply IN PERSON at the UNM Continuing Education Conference Center, 1634 University Blvd. NE, starting December 8. Any materials or special fees must be paid for by the student. Limited to one class per person.
Your tuition, minus a $15 cancellation fee per non-credit class, will be refunded if a WRITTEN request is delivered or mailed and RECEIVED in this office 48 hours prior to the first scheduled class meeting. No refunds can be given after the first scheduled class meeting. Phone requests will not be accepted. The $15 cancellation fee applies to every refund request. There are no exceptions.
Refunds will NOT be processed unless you return the class card, which is the official receipt, showing proof of enrollment.
Immediate cash refunds are not given for withdrawal from a class or when a class is cancelled. If a refund is due or if overpayment has been made by check, there is a 21 day hold period from the payment receipt date before the refund is processed. MasterCard/VISA card refunds will be credited to the charge card.
Any exceptions to the general refund policy are noted in the course description. Please pay close attention to these exceptions when registering. Kindly submit your refund request in person or by mail to: UNM Continuing Education, Non-Credit Registration Center, 1634 University Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87131-4006.
Your FULL tuition will be refunded if a course is cancelled before the first scheduled class meeting. All registered persons will be contacted and given the opportunity to transfer to another course or to receive a refund.
You may transfer from one non-credit course to another, regardless of the length of either course, if you do so before they both begin. Transfer requests will not be processed unless you return your class card showing proof of enrollment. Limitations on transfers are as follows:
Courses with 5 or more meetings: You may transfer from one course to another before the second scheduled meeting of both courses.
Courses with fewer than 5 meetings: Transfers must be made before the opening date of the course in which you first enrolled.
Exceptions: Some programs have special transfer policies as printed in individual course descriptions or in special program announcements.
A $5 transfer fee, payable at time of transfer, will be charged for each request that is processed. It is recommended that you either (1) request transfers in person at the UNM Continuing Education Conference Center (north of Indian School), or (2) submit your request in writing and mail to: UNM Continuing Education, Registration Department, 1634 University Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87131-4006.
UNM Continuing Education reserves the right to cancel, reschedule, or combine non-credit classes, and to change instructors. Because UNM Continuing Education receives no state tax support for non-credit classes, classes may be cancelled prior to or at the first scheduled meeting if fewer than the required minimum number of students enroll. If a class is cancelled or rescheduled you may request an official transfer (transfer fee waived) to another class or a refund of your enrollment fee. Each registered student will be notified by UNM Continuing Education of class cancellations or scheduled changes.
During inclement weather, listen to KKOB Radio, AM 770 for a listing of class cancellations, or call 277-SNOW.
The UNM Continuing Education Unit (CEU) Program gives recognition on a national basis to persons continuing their education and keeping up-to-date in their chosen fields by participating in UNM sponsored non-credit programs.
One Continuing Education unit is defined as ten contact hours in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction.
UNM Continuing Education keeps records of CE Units and will furnish, upon request, to a participant or his/her designee, an official certificate of units earned at The University of New Mexico.
Application of Credit Toward Licensing and Other Professional Certification Requirements: When courses in this catalog have been approved by government agencies, professional associations/boards/societies, and other authorities as meeting their continuing education criteria, a statement to this effect appears in the section in which the courses are listed, or in the individual course description.
In other cases it is best to check with the appropriate organization before you enroll, to be sure that the course is acceptable.
ALL TUITION AND FEES FOR NON-CREDIT COURSES ARE PAYABLE IN ADVANCE OF THE COURSE, SEMINAR, OR WORKSHOP. We cannot guarantee you a place in the class until we receive your tuition payment. If your tuition is to be paid by your employer, UNM Continuing Education can bill your organization/company if a properly signed purchase order is received. INDIVIDUALS CANNOT BE BILLED.
For all eligible UNM Faculty and Staff, the University will cover the cost of tuition for one or more approved courses not to exceed the cost of New Mexico resident tuition for eight credit hours each semester and four credit hours each summer session. Eligible courses include courses offered by the University for undergraduate, graduate, or professional development and improvement of work-related skills offered by UNM Continuing Education.
The remission also applies to correspondence and extension courses. It does not apply to seminars and workshops that are not offered by the University. The tuition remission will not cover any in-class materials or CEU fees. Remissions will be accepted on a first come, first served basis for classes as space permits. Forms are available from your department office or from UNM Human Resources. PROPERLY COMPLETED REMISSIONS MUST ACCOMPANY REGISTRATIONS. Proper completion includes all required signatures. A Registration Form found on page 214 must accompany non-credit remissions. Please consult the Tuition Remission Program Policy (3700) effective 12/16/94 for further information.
Parking is free and readily available for classes held at the UNM Continuing Education Conference Center and 801 University SE (Science & Technology Park). For classes held on the UNM main campus and north campus, ALL PARKING LOTS ARE RESTRICTED TO PERMIT PARKING ONLY FROM 7:00AM-10:00PM, MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY. These parking regulations are STRICTLY enforced. Parking is permitted only in authorized locations and in designated spaces in parking lots. Cars found improperly parked will be ticketed by Campus Police or towed away at owner's expense. For information on fees and how to obtain parking permits, please call Parking Services, 1621 Central NE, 277-3720.
UNM operates RIDEPOOL, a transportation, information and referral service which helps you to join an appropriate car or van pool. To use this free service call 243-RIDE: they'll take your commute information, and get you in a RIDEPOOL.
Participants in most Professional Development Programs will receive a packet of materials used in the class. Some non-credit courses may require a separate textbook or materials fee, and are noted in the catalog. Books required or recommended for non-credit courses are available in the Continuing Education Section of the UNM Bookstore. Regular hours are 8:00am-5:00pm on weekdays, Wednesdays until 6:00pm, and 10:00am-3:00pm on Saturdays. Required texts for credit courses are shelved in the appropriate departmental section of the UNM Bookstore.
Persons enrolled in non-credit courses have UNM library borrowing privileges for the duration of the course in which they are enrolled. The student must obtain a Limited Borrower Card from the Zimmerman Library, which can be issued at Zimmerman between 8:00am-5:00pm, Monday through Friday, upon presentation of a class card or receipt.
If you wish to participate as an instructor within the Division of Continuing Education by sharing your knowledge or skill, please come by and pick up an instructor application packet at 1634 University Blvd. NE. The University of New Mexico is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
If you've ever wondered what to buy for that special person who has everything, give them a Gift Certificate from UNM Continuing Education. A Gift Certificate is good for any non-credit class offered through UNM Continuing Education and allows the recipient to select the class of their choice.
To purchase a Gift Certificate for a special occasion call 277-CLASS, or come to the UNM Continuing Education Conference Center located at 1634 University Blvd. NE (north of Indian School) in Albuquerque.
Because the Division of Continuing Education at The University of New Mexico is self-supporting, we are grateful to businesses or individuals who are able to donate materials or supplies that could be used at our Conference Center or for one of our programs. Also, we are in need of classroom space, so please call us if you know of a facility that might be available.
If you are interested in making a donation, a list of needs can be furnished to you. Because we are a non- profit institution, donations may be tax deductible in compliance with Federal regulations.
The University of New Mexico is committed to providing equal educational and employment opportunity regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, physical or mental handicap, age, gender, sexual preference, ancestry, or medical condition. Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender in any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance by way of grant, contract, or loan. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is similar in its prohibition of discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 prohibit discrimination against qualified persons with disabilities. Equal educational opportunity includes: admission, recruitment, extracurricular programs and activities, housing, facilities, access to course offerings, counseling and testing, financial assistance, employment, health and insurance services and athletics. Students with special needs requiring special accommodations should contact the Division at 277-CLASS.

The Division of Continuing Education is a self-supporting entity of The University of New Mexico. Our success is a direct result of continued support from the community.
In the current economic environment, an increasing proportion of charitable gifts to UNM will come in the form of bequests or donations. Therefore, "The University of New Mexico Foundation, Inc." has been established.
Continuing Education has many programs that are directly supportive of the local and stateside population. These specialty programs are always in need of special assistance.
Celebrate Youth is a unique mentorship program which matches over 400 young people ranging in age from 9 to 18 with a credentialed adult from the community. In tandem, they spend a year working on a myriad of fascinating projects and multi-cultural performance pieces which are showcased at a three-day festival in June.
Series for the Arts began as part of the UNM Centennial Celebrations as a way of promoting interest in classical guitar and other forms of art and music for students of all ages. As a part of the Series, workshops are given in such areas as guitar, vihuela, guitarron, trumpet, violin, harp, and voice. Proceeds from the Series help to foster education in the arts. With additional funding, we hope to continue showcasing the rich cultural background of various minorities within the State.
Tony Oliver Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in November of 1988 to assist students who are in need of educational support.
If a bequest or donation is made to any of the special programs established through The Division of Continuing Education, please contact the Office of Trusts and Bequests, at the University of New Mexico Foundation, Inc. You or your legal advisor will be assisted with all necessary details. Please call 277-4503 or 1-800- UNM-FUND. We would like to express our sincere gratitude for your support and generosity.
