The Certificate in Management

For the past ten years, the UNM Continuing Education Professional Development Program and the American Management Association have worked in cooperation to provide professional management courses. Together, they have developed two Certificate in Management programs; these programs are designed to meet the needs of working professionals seeking to learn state-of-the-art, business related skills.

The AMA programs offered are in the following areas:

The program is a skills-oriented learning opportunity, and the curriculum represents the essential core of management education. The AMA courses are nationally recognized for their comprehensiveness and quality, and our faculty are professionals with established business experience as well as excellent teaching skills.

The Quality Service section was implemented during the Summer of 1993. Students enrolled in the AMA program prior to the Summer semester are not responsible for completing the Quality Service section. Students enrolling in the program beginning with the Summer 1993 semester are required to take one class from the Quality Service section to receive their certification.

To earn the Certificate in Management, the student is required to successfully complete six American Management Association courses offered through the Professional Development Program, with at least one course from each of the areas listed above

The Advanced Certificate

An Advanced Certificate in Management may be obtained by successfully completing three additional AMA courses, for a total of nine courses.

Class Times, Fees and Schedule

Each semester, a variety of UNM/AMA courses will be offered in each area of concentration. Unless otherwise indicated, courses will meet for a total of 12 contact hours. The fee for each course is $285, which includes an AMA course text. To complete the certificate program requirements, the courses may be taken in any order, and there is no time limit for completion of the program.

UNM/AMA Faculty

The University of New Mexico has added the critical element of experience to increase the effectiveness of the Management program. Our faculty are professionals with business experience who share a common background as consultants to business and industry.

1013 Creating a Competitive Advantage through Innovation (QS)

Innovation is essential to organizational survival in today’s competitive world. Whether the innovation is a small process improvement or a breakthrough product or service idea that has "home run" potential, its success depends on a manager’s ability to encourage, manage, nurture and guide those innovations.

This course will show you how to take products, services or processes from idea to successful implementation. You’ll discover how successful innovators combine vision and street smarts to select high-potential ideas, gain support, locate sources, schedule a project, inspire and reward an innovative team, and prepare for the next generation of improvements. You’ll learn how senior managers, mid-level managers, supervisors, and grass roots innovators work together to spark creativity and lobby for the innovative ideas that keep customers coming back.

With the aid of surveys, checklists and worksheets, you will learn about the innovation process, build your skills, and create a blueprint for action that you can use on the job to nurture innovation.
