2100 Paralegal Certificate Program
This intensive 84-hour program is designed for beginning as well as advanced legal workers. Students will be trained to assist trial attorneys, interview witnesses, investigate complex fact patterns, research the law, and help prepare cases for courtroom litigation. This instruction is practice-oriented and relates to those areas of the law in which legal assistants are most in demand. You'll be expected to complete a significant amount of homework for each weekly session. Successful graduates will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from UNM Division of Continuing Education & Community Services.
Topics include:
Week 1: Legal terminology, documents and the litigation process
Week 2: Introduction to the evidentiary predicate
Week 3: Identifying relevant authority
Week 4: Introduction to legal research
Week 5: Legal research practice
Week 6: Legal writing
This course is team-taught by Scott Hatch, JD and other attorneys and paralegals from the Albuquerque and Denver areas.
REQUIRED TEXTS: Introduction to Paralegalism, 5th Edition, by William Statsky; A Paralegal Primer, 2nd Edition, by Scott and Lisa Hatch; Paralegal Procedures and Practices, by Scott and Lisa Hatch; Basics of Legal Document Preparation, by Robert Cummins; a copy of the New Mexico Rules of Court.
RECOMMENDED TEXTS: Ballentine's Legal Dictionary and Thesaurus.
