Alcohol & Drug Abuse Studies Prevention Specialist Studies

Alcohol & Drug Abuse Studies

This program of thirteen two-day courses covers all aspects of alcohol and drug counseling. Designed ten years ago, it has been continuously refined by the UNM Division of Continuing Education Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies program and the UNM Department of Psychology to provide the highest quality of counselor training.

Although a high school diploma or GED is the only academic background required for the ADAS series, many professionals with advanced degrees (nurses, hospital administrators, therapists, etc.) have taken this series of courses to enhance their skills or to prepare for licensure.

This series begins in late August/September and concludes in April. Each Saturday/Sunday course lasts from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and includes a test and essay assignment. There are no more than two courses per month.

Each Saturday-Sunday course is taught by a different instructor and is awarded a UNM letter-grade for one hour of undergraduate credit (13 credits for the full program, 208 contact hours).

Prevention Specialist Studies

In response to a national move toward the training and certification of Prevention Specialists, this program produces a core of trained educators and community leaders prepared to create, evaluate, and sustain positive community and school programs for the prevention of violence and drug abuse. Each class within the seven-course program has a practical component that results in strategies, manuals, and/or evaluation plans for prevention strategies. There are seven courses, each providing one academic credit and consisting of 16 contact hours.

Each program is designed with the special needs and schedules of specific communities. If your community is interested in a disciplined and systematic approach to the prevention of violence and drug abuse, please phone to arrange a customized program.

For more information on these programs, please call 277-1202 to be placed on the VSAP mailing list.
