If you are uncomfortable in the water or cannot swim a 50-foot width, this course is for you. Basic skills and water safety will be covered with an introduction to deep water. Students furnish suits. Physical fitness through swimming is the basis of this course. Build endurance and perfect efficiency in swimming strokes. Students must be in excellent health and feel comfortable in deep water. Students should know these strokes: crawl, backcrawl, sidestroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke. Students must be able to swim 100 yards. This course may be repeated. Physicians written approval requested within the first two weeks of class. Note: I.D. cards must be picked up at the first class meeting at the west entrance to Johnson Center. Parents, learn techniques for teaching your child through demonstration, repetition, and praise. This course promotes water safety knowledge and practices, aquatic adjustment and swimming readiness skills, participation, socialization, and fun and enjoyment in the water. Parents must provide their own suits and towels. Enrollment is limited to 10 parent/child teams. Note: Enter Johnson Center through pool entrance.

Children ages 3-7 years who are comfortable in the water but cannot swim will be exposed to basic swimming skills, such as rhythmic breathing, gliding, beginner stroke, backstroke, and frontcrawl. Parents must furnish a written clearance from the childs physician. Children must provide their own suits and towels. Enrollment is limited to 8 children. Parents are encouraged (but not required) to be in the water with their child. Note: Enter Johnson Center through pool entrance.

109 naui scuba diving: open water I
Learn to enjoy the underwater world. Included in the course is your professional instructor, pool fees, certification materials, handouts, rental of scuba equipment, 40 hours of combined class, pool and 5 open water dives. Each student is required to come to the first class prepared for the pool with their own mask, snorkel, fins, and boots. A physicians approval is required by all students prior to the first night of class. Each student is asked to contact the facility at 888-7990 for an orientation. A $175.00 fee is payable to the facility at the first class meeting.

111 river canoeing
This class is designed for beginners and consists of one classroom session and two full days on the river. The two-day trip will be held on the Rio Grande in the Rio Grande Gorge State Park near Pilar, New Mexico, one of the favorite white water areas in New Mexico. Basic and intermediate skills for river canoeing will be covered (sweep stroke, drawe, pry braces, peelouts, eddy turns, surfing, ferring, reading, etc.).
Swimming is a prerequisite. All instructors are nationally certified. Tuition includes all river equipment. Enrollment is limited. A $60 fee is payable to the instructor at the first class meeting. Food, transportation and lodging are at the participants expense.

113 white water kayaking: beginning
Experience kayaking during 4 pool sessions and a two-day river trip. The trip will be held in Pilar, a favorite white water area of New Mexico. Learn basic and intermediate skills for white water kayaking: sweepstroke, drawstroke, high brace, low brace, peelouts, eddy turns, Eskimo roll, surfing, ferrying techniques, and reading white water. Swimming is a prerequisite. Tuition includes all equipment, including wet suits and dinner on Saturday night. Enrollment is limited. 117 intensive beginning river kayaking
This course will be taught in four consecutive days, Thursday evening through Sunday and is designed primarily for out-of-towners or persons who are looking for an in-depth course. This is a great mini-vacation package for couples wishing to get well on their way to becoming a skilled whitewater paddler. Start with an evening in the comfort of a heated swimming pool, followed by one day of paddling techniques on a small lake. Finish with two full days on the Rio Grande in rapids perfect for learning. We supply everything except meals, tent, sleeping bag and personal items. Please bring your lunch. Breakfast and supper are available at local restaurants. A youth hostel is available. A $185 fee is payable to the instructor at the first class meeting.

120 tandem lake canoeing
Our one-day lake canoeing classes are designed to get you feeling comfortable paddling a tandem canoe in quiet or flat moving water. We use sequential teaching progressions in which each skill you learn helps make the next skill easier.
We focus on developing clean, efficient techniques based on torso rotation and posture. You will learn the proper forward and back stroke, sweep stroke, draw stroke, stern pry "J" stroke, braces, tandem communication, canoe-over-canoe rescue, deep water re-entries and more.
Tandem canoeing is a great sport for the whole family. Sign up by yourself or invite a friend. The class includes all state of the art boating equipment, lifejackets, paddles and rain gear. You will need a change of clothes and a hearty lunch. We will meet near the west side recreation area.
