Biography
David Henkel is Program Director and has been associated
with the Community and Regional Planning program since 1985. He earned
his PhD in the Sociology of Development (with minors in City and Regional
Planning and in International Agriculture) from Cornell University, and
his BA and MA from the University of Pennsylvania in South Asia Regional
Studies. His research and professional experience include regional master
planning and job creation studies, rapid rural appraisal, land suitability
analysis, ecotourism, transnational natural resource management, and agro-industrial
systems research.
Dr. Henkel's regional emphases include Southeast Asia, Latin America,
the British Isles, and the US Southwest. His work includes comprehensive
plans for the villages of Colombus and Chama, various regional development
plans and a number of studios on the New Mexico - Chihuahua border region.
He is fluent in French and Welsh, has lectured in Spanish, and also has
worked in Indonesian, and Chinese (Mandarin).
Professor Henkel has taught Analytical Methods for Planners, Cultural
Aspects of Community Development, Social Policy and Planning, Regional
Planning Process, Natural Resource Planning, Natural Resources Field Methods,
Planning Communication Techniques, and Planning studios. He has maintained
a private consulting practice with New Mexico public and Native American
organizations, and he has served as Director of the New Mexico State Economic
Development Division as well as Director of Planning for the Southwest
Border Regional Commission. Dr. Henkel is a member of the American Planning
Association, Association of Borderlands Scholars, Association of Collegiate
Schools of Planning, and the Society for Human Ecology.
