RCRP

MISSION STATEMENT

The Resource Center for Raza Planning was formed to contribute to the community development, design and natural resource planning efforts of traditional communities in New Mexico. The goal of RCRP is to maintain the sustainability and survivability of our traditional communities. We promote integration between higher education and our traditional communities through the application of planning processes and techniques. RCRP conceives planning as multi-disciplinary, intergenerational, directly responsive to community needs, and developed through ongoing, long-term relationships.

DESCRIPTION

The Resource Center for Raza Planning is a Center within the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of New Mexico. We are planning researchers and policy analysts engaged in public policy issues related to growth and development in New Mexico. In addition, we deal with issues such as economic development, land use, land tenure, infrastructure, transportation, water rights, water use and quality, agricultural preservation, and a multitude of other planning issues.

- Sustaining future generations through cultural preservation, ecological conservation and economic vitality.
- Ensuring planning processes that foster active community participation for just and effective decision making.
- Forming mutually beneficial relationships based on honor, respect and trust so that work within our communities results in positive contributions.
- Providing information and analysis with the intent to educate and clarify the implications of development policies on our traditional communities.
- Promoting integration between higher education and our traditional communities through the application of planning processes and techniques and through linking resources.
- Advocating for planning processes and development policies that ensure economic equality, political self representation, cultural preservation and ecological conservation for social and environmental harmony.
- Standing against development which displaces and impoverishes communities and destroys local ecology.
- Challenging processes and institutions which continually deny communities their given right to land, natural resources, human services, economic wealth and environmental health.
- Creating a community among ourselves, thereby supporting the personal, academic and professional growth and leadership of our brothers and sisters with whom we laugh and break bread.
- Holding one another accountable to act with integrity, respect, honesty, responsibility and confidence; and to maintain a balance between pride and humility.
