CS131 (2CR) and CS132 (1CR) are entry-level companion computer science courses developed at UNM
to provide an introduction to modern computing to the University community.
Orientation
A curious feature of the evolution of computer technology is that while availability has improved
dramatically, accessibility has actually declined. Simply accessing computer resources at UNM is
obscured through a bewildering array of diverse layers of technology. In part this is consequence
of the natural increase in complexity and sophistication of hardware and software.
To provide a level playing field, no prior computer experience is assumed for entry into CS131 and
students are introduced to computing at UNM in a classroom with hands-on computer access. They will
gain an appreciation of the network of services available at UNM.
Literacy
The price of user friendliness and computational power is loss of flexibility and control. In these
courses we lay foundations of basic principles and understanding to empower students to employ
computers creatively to address their needs and interests. Students are exposed to a variety of
precise languages to communicate with computers, including command, basic processing and editing
languages. In addition they are taught how to build web pages from the ground up using markup
languages such as HTML and CSS style control. In this manner they strengthen their general logic
and communication skills.
Culture
Unix is a free and friendly operating system that encourages innovation and creativity. It is open
and transparent which means it is totally accessible. Students will learn how to install and run
Unix on their personal computers. They become part of a community of motivated contributors that
comprises the largest human enterprise ever undertaken. Through discussions of historical and
current events in class, students will gain appreciation of the relevance, politics and sociology
of computer technology in modern society.
Skill
One goal of Introduction to Unix and the World Wide Web is to provide the methodology and tools for
students to apply to their academic and professional pursuits ranging from science and technology
to fine arts. Unix capability is widely sought after in the market place. Several course members
have been hired by the UNM Information Technologies Department as student consultants. An objective
of these courses is to instill sufficient confidence in students to successfully pursue further
courses in computer science. It is not uncommon for students to refine and focus their majors
through their experience in CS 131/132.
