Introduction to Unix and the World Wide Web

Instructions and Utilities for Internet Connections

If you need to create a UNM account or restore or change your password, click here.

Note in all cases discussed below the hostname for Linux/Unix at UNM is linux.unm.edu and the account/user name is your UNM Unix user account ID (your "NetID").

Note that if you have a firewall, you may have to add permission to access the Internet for any programs you installl.
  • Using a telephone modem to connect to UNM

    Dial-up Networking for Windows 98, 2000, ME & XP
ITS Articles for off campus connections

  • PC (Windows) Utilities to run Unix character terminals at UNM and upload/download files

If you have Windows 2000 or XP, click here

Download and install the PuTTY ssh client

After your SSH client is installed, start it running by clicking on its icon on the desktop. Enter linux.unm.edu for the hostname.

  • PC (Windows) Utilities to run Unix X Window applications at UNM on a local computer (X Window servers for Windows)

    Cygwin/X

  • Mac Notes

Macs have a terminal built in. Select Finder, then Applications, then Terminal. When the terminal prompt appears, enter: ssh user@linux.unm.edu where user is your UNM account name (NetID). When the first connection is made you will be asked to accept an authorization to access linux.unm.edu. Answer yes. If connection is successful, you will be asked to enter your UNM account password. If successful, you will be running at UNM.

The above should work on the Macs at UNM. If you bring your own Mac, note that the wireless airport connection may not work. One student was successful, however, using a physical Ethernet cable plugged into their Mac.
