Assignment 5 – Pecos River Headwaters, Reservoirs and Stream Gauges

The purpose of this assignment was to introduce us to the use and application of hydrologic units (HUCs).  The area of interest for this project is the headwater region of the Pecos River in northeastern New Mexico.  We began by importing the HUC, streams and reservoirs interchange files (.e00) for HUC 13 – the entire Pecos River watershed.  From this point we wanted to ‘isolate’ HUC 13060001 to show only the headwaters of the Pecos – all streams above Sumner Reservoir.  This was accomplished by simply using the ‘Selection’ tool in ArcMap.  There was one small issue in that there was one drainage not included in the collection of the headwater streams.  Because the idea was to show all of the headwaters of the Pecos above Sumner Reservoir, an additional HUC was interactively selected and included – HUC 1360002, that of Pintada Creek – in the overall analysis.  The following ArcMap layout was designed to show not only the stream network for the Pecos headwaters, but also some representative data on the reservoirs in that locations as well as some stream gauge locational data.
