I am interested in conservation ecology at multiple scales. My research utilizes two principle areas of research: community ecology and macroecology in order to address basic ecological and conservation questions at both local and global scales. My community ecology work focuses on understanding the natural and anthropogenic mechanisms that affect community structure and biodiversity, with an emphasis on keystone species, given their central role in the structure and function of ecosystems. Much of my work has focused on the roles of keystone rodents in grassland ecosystems. I recently have expanded on this theme to understand how their roles interact with domestic mammalian herbivores, and how the two can co-exist within the context of human-environment interactions. More recently, I have expanded my research into exploring global-scale trends in mammalian biodiversity.
