MURRAY AND MARIAN RYAN'S FAMILY EVENTS PAGE

Time for some news from the Ryan side of the Darling - Ryan union.

Silver City, NM puts out a very slick and colorful magazine touting Silver City and Grant County. The last issue had a special spread on Mary's brother, Murray Ryan and his wife Marian. Below are a couple of pictures from the article. The one on the left shows Murray and Marian at home and the other was taken in front of the Silver City/Grant County Murray Ryan Visitor's Center. How about that.

Home is where the
heart is We're proud of this city and
county!

The article states, "Dedication to his southwest New Mexico constituents and to the general welfare of the state made Murray Ryan's thirty-year effort in the New Mexico Legislature one of the most respected and effective careers in the state's history." We think that great tribute is really an understatement!

The article further relates, "In 1968, despite the fact that a Republican had not been elected to the State House of Representatives from Murray's district in 50 years, a study of the election returns convinced him that a Republican could win. His wife Marian and the three children still at home met Murray after work each day and the five of them campaigned incessantly in the mining district. Murray won that election and many more to follow." Actually they won all of the succeeding elections until he decided to retire. He was so popular that more often than not he was without opposition in either the primary or general elections. But he always campaigned as if it was his initial run for office. CONGRATULATIONS, MURRAY AND MARIAN AND FAMILY! Murray and Marian's children are Murray of Española, Kathleen of Silver City, Robin of Albuquerque, Kerry of Silver City, and Kevin. We all miss Kevin, whom we lost 10 years ago.

While we are acknowledging tributes to the Ryan family we want to mention that Murray and Marian's son, Dr. Murray Ryan, MD, received the 2001 New Mexico Sportsmanship Award for the Class AA schools. These awards are "considered the NMAA's highest honor" according to the New Mexico Activities Association. Dr. Ryan's nomination for the award said, in part, "Dr. Murray Ryan, McCurdy School; 'While attending a mid-high basketball game, I noticed that the floors were in need of some sweeping after the second quarter. Before I knew it, there was Dr. Ryan, a Yale graduate, with mop in hand, cleaning up the floors in front of the rest of us still sitting in the bleachers. His humility and dedication to the children and youth of our valley have made a tremendous difference to my family.'" - (signed) Deborah Simon, President, Espanola Rotary Club.

Is everyone on
board?

Mopping the floor for basketball and volley ball games was the least of his contributions. He drove the bus on trips for the various McCurdy teams, lined the football field, gave the athletes free physicals, and many other things to make sure these young people had safe and fulfilling activities to occupy their time during these important and formative teen age years. It must be mentioned that his wife, Debby, was there to support all these activities - and take pictures of the events so the young people of McCurdy High School could have a lasting memory of these experiences. And they have been doing this for years - and will be doing it again next year! The Ryan sons, Nicholas and Derek, graduated from McCurdy and daughter, Gretchen, will graduate next spring. Nicholas will graduate from West Point next spring and Derek will be a sophomore at the University of Denver next fall.

In accepting the award Dr. Ryan said, "It's very much an honor to even be considered for this award, so just being nominated was enough. I had no idea they were doing this until not too long ago. It's nice, but I hate to take credit for this. I just try to help out whenever the school needs it."

CONGRATULATION TO TWO GREAT AND CARING PEOPLE - DR. MURRAY AND NURSE DEBBY.
