William, son of Jacob Brumbach and Dorothy Bar (Baer?), was born in Exeter Twp., Berks Co., Pa., on Jan. 9, 1814. While a boy he went to his father's woolen mill to learn the business in all its departments. In 1842 he and Jacob B. became owners of the mill and conducted it for three years, when the latter withdrew, and William operated it alone until 1853. He then purchased the Housum mill on Antietam Creek and conducted both mills until their destruction by fire in 1863. He then went to Union County, Pa., and became partner in the firm of Marr, Griffey & Co., operating the White Deer Woolen Mills. The senior partner died a few years later and the firm name became Griffey & Brumbach, under which name the plant was operated until after William's death at Reading, Pa., on Jan. 19, 1869.

William was a Whig and a Republican and member of the Reform Church. His first wife, Sarah Spatz was born in 1819 and in died 1847. She was a daughter of Jacob Spatz, who was a farmer and butcher in Exeter Twp.

His second wife, Rachel Schneider was born on Jan. 6, 1827. She was the daughter of David and Mary Magdalena (Leinbach) Schneider (the children spell the name "Snyder"), a farmer of Oley Twp., who lived about one mile above the "Oley Line" hotel, upon the Monocacy Creek.

5. William, born, Jan. 23, 1863; died Feb. 19, 1863.
6. Mary Magdalene was born Nov. 25, 1864. On Oct. 14, 1884
she married Charles Snyder, born April 18, 1860. He was the son of
Simon and Mary (Esterly) Snyder. He was a railway mail clerk; address,
Esterly, Pa. They had one daughter, Maud Rachel Snyder, born July 30,
1886: died May 26, 1905.
