    August 26, 2008 (class #1)
    Topic: Introduction

    Class outline:
4:20-4:45 Interactive presentation: Brief overview of the class
    4:45-5:15 Syllabus scavenger hunt
    5:15-5:25 Verifying our winning team
    5:25-5:35 Break
5:35-6:00 Small group activity: What are all of the things that we want to know about our students?
    • Working by yourself, write down as many answers to the above questions as you can come up with in 5-10 minutes. Write each idea down on a separate sticky note.
    • Start by working with a neighbor, and then expand to work with several others, to group your ideas into categories that make sense to you. Please note -- there is no ONE right answer!
    • When you are ready, list your categories on a big piece of paper and tape to the wall. Include a few examples under each category.
    6:00-6:15 Report out from groups
6:15-6:30 Working individually or in groups of no more than 3, identify the concerns and curiosities you have about assessment. You may use represent your work in any format you wish -- such as by using big paper (pictures, graphs, lists, etc.), the white board, musically, dramatically, or developing a list in your notebook to share with the group as a whole.
6:30-6:45 Those who wish may report out
    6:45-6:50 Minute paper:
    • What was the most important concept you learned in class today?
    • What was the muddiest part of the class?

    Overheads:
