Discussion of the article “Portfolio Assessment and Special Education Students”
(Sue, Lupe, JoJo, Erica, Liz, Silvia, Diana, Danielle)

    Interesting ideas …

    •  Student reflection – very important, but we don’t do yet (ESJES)– this can be a very meaningful and authentic writing experience
    •  Editing of portfolios with students and teachers
    •  Portfolios allow students to listen to /hear themselves
    •  Behavioral portfolios – could be used with students with behavior issues- would work with all kids, not just special education students
    •  Video taping can be used to let students and parents see the student at work
    •  There should be specific goals regarding the items chosen for the portfolio – students should be very familiar with these goals
    •  AHS cluster has a rep from every HS, MS and ES involved in the portfolio discussion.  Started in literacy and it was decided to use 3 pieces of writing throughout the year, ESJES has also included the math exemplars – 3 of these at each grade level as well.  Washington MS is willing to accept our portfolios and AHS is getting ready for them as well.  Each school is left to set goals or not.  Sue will attend the cluster portfolio team meeting next Monday and she hopes to take some of the ideas about portfolios that we have discussed in this class to share with the team.
    • The article mentions that it is  important  to have the students and teachers choose the pieces for the portfolio
    •  Time is an issue – can we train the students to manage their portfolios themselves?
    •  Storage is also an issue at the district level – technology will probably allow us much more than we think

    Cluster Level Portfolios Discussion

    •  We are not sure what other clusters are doing – but Sue has heard that other schools are working on portfolios
    •  The AHS cluster is collecting 3 writing pieces a year and ESJES has decided to also collect 3 pieces of the Math performance assessment
    •  How can we make the collection of these pieces more of a real portfolio assessment activity – the major pieces missing are the reflection piece and student choice in the selection.
    •  Should every school have a portfolio day?  Especially for the 5th graders?  Invite family member, friends, other teachers, the principal.
    •  Does every school have a goal and a rubric or a way of measuring the selected work?

Kristin’s Presentation of 1st grade portfolios at Wherry
(1st grade has done a lot of work to pilot these and are sharing it with the other grades)

    •  Reading Record Card (Color Coded by grade level)
    •  Concepts About Print (Marie Clay)
    •  Reading Assessment – DRA
    •  KDPR
    •  K Writing Rubric – 4 or 5 samples throughout the year – could be taken out of journal
    •  K 6 trait writing rubric
    • Teacher comment page

(Kristin will make copies for next week.)
