March
March is a beautful month in Albuquerque -- the first bulbs start appearing and early fruit trees start to bloom!

However, the weather can be extremely variable. In 2003, we started off the month with snow! But since January was so warm and dry this year, any precipitation is welcome, in any form.
.
During the second week of the month this year (2003), we got a week straight of high 60's+ temps, reaching the low 70's by the 14th. It was well above freezing at night (high 30's) that week, but we can still get a hard freeze for the rest of the month at least. However, the earliest flowering trees (i.e. Bradford Pear) are already getting starting by the first part of March.

My peach tree is in a sheltered location in a courtyard in front of the house. It is planted against a south facing wall, but gets shade from a large tree and the house during the late afternoon. It began blooming mid-March in 2002 and in 2003, it bloomed about a week earlier.

Another flowering tree, a bush cherry, I believe, also started blooming this month. I took this picture March 14, 2003

Donkey tail spurge, one of my favorite perennials, has been blooming like crazy since February. It self-seeds in the gravel and pebble paths that divide my perennial beds. It is easy to control, though, and never seems to want to seed itself within the garden beds. So I use it in place of Lady's mantle, which is recommended for exactly that purpose but which is too delicate for my high desert garden.

In Fall 2001 I planted several hundred bulbs (white crocuses and white grape hyacinth) and I had been worried as to whether they would come up or not. However, not to fear, quite a few of them seem to have made it just fine. I am even beginning to see the foliage from the muscari emerge, so they should begin blooming some time next month.

Other plants of interest this month include daffodils, and ground cover veronicas. Grape Hyacinth (muscari) also begin blooming at the very end of the March.
