What did you do over Spring Break?

Participants:

Para = Mrs. Rebby (paraprofessional),

Janie = Janie (female, kindergarten student),

OS = other unidentified kindergarten students

Setting: Whole group lesson in an mixed native-English and native-Spanish speaking classroom.

Para: We’re gonna talk about what you did during Spring vacation. Que hicieron du- durante la vacación, cuando no habia escuela. (What did you do during the vacation, when there wasn’t school.) Haber, (Let’s see,) uh Jamie what did you do during Spring Break.

Janie: Uhm, U::hm

OS: ((blowing raspberries))

Janie: I had a,, s- s- sign, [XX my baby]

OS: [yo [[XX]]

OS: [[(blowing raspberries)]]

Para: She’s talking

Janie: An- an-,, an I say Mom I XX taking a bath and I play with ‘em

Para: That’s nice

Janie: An,, [XX in the bathtub]

OS: [((several students talking at once))]

Para: Okay, but I have to make it short cause everybody’s gotta take a chance Mario, que hiciste [durante la vacación?] (Mario, what did you do over vacation?)

OS: [yo yo] (me, me)

OS: [I don’t wanna turn]

Janie: [I’M NOT DONE]

Para: Okay, tell me, tell me Janie, cause you kind of stopped I thought you were done, I’m sorry.

Janie: XX

Para: Yevette

Janie: And the s- s- s- X and then they come and they XX hot [X and we eat and- and the back, we eat them], we ate and the back and we XX

Para: [Aubrey, sit over here. Aubrey, sit over here and face me, Yevette]

Para: Okay everybody’s gotta take a turn, okay

OS: ((blowing rasberries))

OS: I don’t wanna turn

OS: Shut up
