Provisional License – Stage #2

Eligible at age 15 ½ (or Older)

Minimum time – one year

  • Must provide proof of successful completion of a state approved Driver Education Program.  

  • Must have held a learner’s permit for a minimum of six months.  

  • Parent must accompany applicant to New Mexico Motor Vehicles Division when applying for Stage ll or Stage lll Licensure.

  • Parental consent is necessary to obtain a provisional license.  A parent must go with you to MVD, and a parent must also certify that the 50 hours of supervised driving has been completed per a state approved driving log.  

  • ID required. Social Security card and one of:

               Original Birth Certificate

               Certified copy of Birth Certificate

               Original Church Record

               Certified copy of Church Record

               Passport

               Indian Census Card

  • Must pass road test.

  • May drive unsupervised between the hours of 5:00am and 12:00am.  Not more than one person (not immediate family) who is under 21 may be in the vehicle.  

  • No restriction for driving with immediate family members (for example, younger brothers and sisters) between the hours of 5:00am and midnight.  

  • May drive between midnight and 5:00am if:

  • Accompanied by licensed driver over the age of 21 who has been licensed for a minimum of three years

  • For work purposes proven by a letter from the employer

  • For school functions proven by a letter from a school official

  • For family necessity proven by a letter from a parent/guardian

  • For religious function proven by a letter from parent/guardian/religious official

  • For medical need proven by a letter from a doctor

  • For a medical emergency

  • Must remain conviction free (same convictions as in stage #1) 90 days prior to applying to graduate to stage #3.

  • Must not have any pending violation at the time of application to graduate to stage #3.
