Crash Outcome Data Evaluation System (CODES)

The New Mexico CODES project was modeled after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's / National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NHTSA/NCSA-CODES) project of the same name. The core objective of CODES work is to link injury outcome data to traffic crash data, thereby enabling analysts to study the relationships between crash characteristics and injury outcomes. Similar CODES projects have been funded in other states to allow for better tracking of the costs of motor vehicle crashes and to determine who pays the costs.

The Division of Government Research performed the New Mexico linkage for 1994 and 1995. Traffic crash data, Hospital Inpatient Discharge data, Trauma Registry data, Office of the Medical Investigator data, and Medicaid data were probabilistically linked using Automatch software. Data preparation and field standardization were accomplished using SAS.The New Mexico CODES project was funded by the New Mexico Traffic Safety Bureau and administered by the New Mexico Department of Health/Division of Epidemiology, Evaluation, and Planning.

The 1995 New Mexico CODES Report (link below), provides a detailed discussion of CODES data preparation, linkage tools, linkage strategy, and linkage results.
