There are several terminal servers and ethernet hubs located in wiring centers at DGR. There are a variety of graphics terminals, X-terminals, PC and Macintosh workstations, laser printers, Epson 1520 color ink jet printer, and other peripherals (digitizer tablets and plotters) connected to the CDCN. All of this equipment is used to access UNM's main computing facilities at the Computing and Information Resources and Technology (CIRT) department, other INTERNET facilities, and DGR's own Windows NT and Macintosh Local area Network (LAN).
DGR routinley uses many CIRT facilities such as an IBM ES 9121/model 511 (512 Mb memory/16 channels - MVS/ESA, VM/ESA, CMS, JES, TSO-E, ISPF, IDMS, VTAM, ACF2), plus several DEC and IBM unix computers, and a Xerox color printer. In addition, CIRT is currently maintaining a dedicated departmental computer (taurus.unm.edu) for DGR's use. This departmental UNIX/AIX computer, an IBM RS6000/C10 (64Mb memory, 24Gb disk, AIX 3.2), is currently in the process of being upgraded with more memory and disk space.
DGR's departmental UNIX/AIX computer currently has software licences for SAS(Base, ETS, FSP, and GRAPH), ARC/INFO, ArcView, S-PLUS, CA-DISSPLA, AUTOMATCH, and Lotus Notes. There are also various software packages such as Adobe PageMaker and Illustrator, SAS, MS Office, DBASE, WordPerfect, ArcView, and Lotus Notes on the PCs and Macintoshes at DGR. CIRT maintains other software such as SPSS, PL/1, C, and FORTRAN that DGR routinely uses. DGR uses many (20+) NCD X-terminals and Tektronix graphics terminals to communicate with this departmental UNIX server.
In addition, a Windows NT domain with many (20+) Pentium PC workstations, a Primary Domain Controller (PDC), Backup Domain Controller (BDC), and dedicated Web server (wwwdgr.unm.edu) have been in operation since the summer of 1997. A new PDC is currently being purchased that will act as a server for SAS, Microsoft Office, CA-DISSPLA, Arc/Info, and other software packages.
All of DGR's Pentium PCs are running Windows NT Workstation and have X-Win32 installed so that the can be used for X client sessions to our departmental UNIX server. The remaning 486 PCs are a mix of Windows 95 and Windows for Workgroups (3.11). Some of the older Pentium PCs have had Linux installed so that we can experiment with its NFS and print server functions.
When all positions are filled, the staff at DGR is usually composed of six full-time members and about a dozen student employees. The background of DGR's staff reflects the diversity of a major university such as UNM. The common interest of DGR's staff and students is centered upon the interdisciplinary application of computing techniques for social issues and improving the quality of information government officials, elected represenatives and the public use to make decisions.
A special note of thanks is due to
Sandia National Laboratories,
the State of New Mexico's
General Services Department (
State Purchasing Division ),
UNM's Surplus Property Department,
and the
Federal Surplus Property Assistance Program
for providing the surplus coumpting equipment that comprise
a large portion of the equipment that DGR currently uses. There
is very little funding available for computing equipment in
DGR's contract and grants and the opportunity to supplement our
inventory with slightly older PCs, Macintoshes, and X-Terminals has been
greatly appreciated.
