New Mexico Data Traffic Crash Data Census - Demographic Health Care Data

The Division of Government Research (DGR) at the University of New Mexico (UNM) provides GIS services to government agencies and the private sector in New Mexico and other states (see Nevada Demonstration). DGR is part of UNM's Institute for Applied Research Services (IARS) and has a long history of commitment to public service oriented projects that focus on business, economic, health care, public policy, public safety, and other social issues important to New Mexico.

Most of DGR's GIS work relies upon the expertise of DGR's staff in data (statistical) analysis and data integration. Our emphasis is primarily upon information or data. We use GIS as a tool to help process, analyze, and depict the data.

DGR's approach for providing GIS and other services has concentrated on combining software packages and developing more flexible solutions. DGR's staff has extensive experience with ESRI's (Environmental Systems Research Institute's) GIS software packages (ARC/INFO, ArcView, and MapObjects) in addition to other industry standard software such as SAS, SPSS, S-Plus, Microsoft Access, and Microsoft Excel. Many of the projects undertaken by DGR require combining GIS, statistical, and database tools using SAS Macro Language, ARC Macro Language, Avenue, and Visual Basic to obtain desired information in the most efficient manner.

In 1981 DGR began developing the Geographic Road Network Database (GRNDB) system which uses SAS (Statistical Analysis System), CA-DISSPLA (Computer Associates), and FORTRAN components. In 1984, DGR was among the first 100 ARC/INFO (ESRI) users combining it with our existing (GRNDB) system. Currently, DGR is combining the (GRNDB) system with ESRI's suite of Internet mapping solutions to help make traffic crash data more accessible to policy makers and the public.

The GRNDB system was designed primarily as a transportation oriented GIS capable of displaying traffic crash data. However, the GRNDB system is also a versatile general GIS that can be used for many other applications (see New Mexico Data).

This WWW page provides examples of completed and current projects along with a listing of technical publications. It will also eventually provide access to many GIS related datasets in ARC/INFO, ArcView, and SAS formats for public use.

Please note that DGR does not specialize in certain Geospatial Information Technologies (GIT) such as digitizing, GPS (Global Positioning Systems), and remote sensing. Our specialty and expertise is the extraction of useful information from data provided to us by others (see Data (Statistical) Analysis and Data Integration). The Earth Data Analysis Center (EDAC), another organization at UNM does provide these services and cooperative arrangements can be made with UNM's EDAC to acquire data using these methods.

The Division of Government Research (DGR) is continuing to develop a web page for the New Mexico 2000 United States Census and other demographic data. This web page is part of DGR's public service function at UNM. It is intended primarily for the public and also other governmental GIS users. In general, public users do not have sophisticated GIS facilities. This web page will provide easy access to data in interactive form and also in a simple to use free GIS package (ESRI's ArcReader). More sophisticated GIS and statistical users that have their own facilities will be provided access to this data in ready-to-use formats that can be further customized to their needs (ArcView, ArcMap, and SAS datasets). This project (the CAAP - Census Aggregation and Accessibility Project) will be developed slowly as resources are available. Click here to view the CAAP.

The Division of Government (DGR) recently won the poster contest for analytical content at the ESRI Southwest User Group Conference (SWUG) held in Taos, New Mexico October 2002. This poster entitled "Measuring Geographic Access to Primary Care Physicians in New Mexico" is available for download as a pdf. Click here to obtain this poster in either 11x17 inches or 34x44 inches formats.

DGR is currently preparing dynamic/interactive mapping and data display facilities using ESRI's ARC IMS. Some of these demonstrations are available below. These demonstrations are in the process of being revised. If they are not available please try again later.

UNM has acquired an ESRI University Site License. Most of ESRI's software is available to UNM departments for education and research uses. UNM's CIRT Department administers this software license through its software distribution facilities. Please click below for more information.
