Demographics

In 2008, there were 15,154 licensed drivers in Gallup. Of these, there were 7,992 females and 7,162 males. The population of Gallup was 19,979. The total number of crashes in 2008 was 757, yielding a crash rate of 38 per thousand people (total number of crashes 757 divided by total population 19,979 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 1999 to 2008 the number of crashes has shown no trend. Fatal and injury crashes have shown a downward trend from 2006 to 2008. Belt usage (as a percentage) has decreased from last year, while belt usage in crashes involving visible and incapacitating injuries has also decreased. There was one fatality in the 7 intersections with the most crashes in 2008. Of these intersections, four involved Munoz Dr.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 197 people convicted of DWI in Gallup, 66 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 131 divided by the total number of people convicted 197 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles was the most common class, accounting for 73 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Other objects, Overturns and Pedestrians resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 45 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 31 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 74 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Following too close and Failing to yield. There were five fatal crashes in 2008. The top contributing factor for the fatal crashes was Alcohol involvement.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 53 percent of drivers in crashes. They account for 47 percent of licensed drivers in Gallup. Nine pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2008. In 2008, no 'Teenagers' or Young Adults were killed in crashes in Gallup. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Gallup 7 percent (5 of 67) were under 21.
