Demographics

In 2008, there were 16,028 licensed drivers in Los Alamos. Of these, there were 7,812 females and 8,216 males. The population of Los Alamos was 18,150. The total number of crashes in 2008 was 172, yielding a crash rate of 9 per thousand people (total number of crashes 172 divided by total population 18,150 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2005 to 2008 the number of crashes has shown a downward trend. Fatal and injury crashes have shown no trend from 1999 to 2008. Belt usage (as a percentage) has increased from last year, while belt usage in crashes involving visible and incapacitating injuries has not changed. There were no fatalities in the 7 intersections with the most crashes in 2008. Of these intersections, six involved Diamond Dr.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 21 people convicted of DWI in Los Alamos, 86 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 18 divided by the total number of people convicted 21 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles was the most common class, accounting for 61 percent of all crashes. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 56 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Van/4 WDs and Pickups each accounted for 18 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. These three vehicle type comprised 82 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Excessive speed and Other. There were no fatal crashes in 2008.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 55 percent of drivers in crashes. They account for 51 percent of licensed drivers in Los Alamos. Two pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2008. In 2008, no 'Teenagers' or Young Adults were killed in crashes in Los Alamos. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Los Alamos 13 percent (1 of 8) were under 21.

Note: The 1999 crash file contains 15% fewer crashes than the 1998 file. This may be due to problems implementing the new system after the old system failed, or to under reporting. Care should be used in interpreting differences between 1999 and other years in this report.
