Demographics

In 2008, there were 14,623 licensed drivers in Silver City. Of these, there were 7,408 females and 7,215 males. The population of Silver City was 10,329. The total number of crashes in 2008 was 374, yielding a crash rate of 36 per thousand people (total number of crashes 374 divided by total population 10,329 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 1999 to 2008 the number of crashes has shown no trend. Fatal and injury crashes have also shown no trend from 1999 to 2008. Belt usage (as a percentage) has increased from last year, while belt usage in crashes involving visible and incapacitating injuries has not changed. There was one fatality in the 7 intersections with the most crashes in 2008. Of these intersections, four involved Silver Heights Blvd.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 47 people convicted of DWI in Silver City, 87 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 41 divided by the total number of people convicted 47 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles was the most common class, accounting for 61 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Fixed objects and Other vehicles resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 46 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 26 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 68 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Failing to yield and Other. There were three fatal crashes in 2008. The top contributing factors for the fatal crashes were Driving left of center, Red light running and Alcohol involvement.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 55 percent of drivers in crashes. They account for 49 percent of licensed drivers in Silver City. Four pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2008. In 2008, no 'Teenagers' or Young Adults were killed in crashes in Silver City. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Silver City 12 percent (2 of 17) were under 21.
