Demographics

In 2009, there were 448,121 licensed drivers in Albuquerque. Of these, there were 225,317 females and 222,803 males. The population of Albuquerque was 528,497. The total number of crashes in 2009 was 18,302, yielding a crash rate of 35 per thousand people (total number of crashes 18,302 divided by total population 528,497 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2007 to 2009 the number of crashes has shown a downward trend. Fatal and injury crashes have also shown a downward trend from 2004 to 2009. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has decreased since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has increased. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has decreased since last year. There was one fatality in the 7 intersections with the most crashes in 2009. Of these intersections, three involved Coors Blvd Nw.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 2,429 people convicted of DWI in Albuquerque, 76 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 1,854 divided by the total number of people convicted 2,429 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles were the most common class, accounting for 79 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Pedalcyclists, Other non-collisions, Overturns, Fixed objects, Pedestrians and Other vehicles resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 52 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Van/4 WDs and Pickups each accounted for 17 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. These three vehicle type comprised 87 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Following too close, Other and Failing to yield. There were 45 fatal crashes in 2009. The top contributing factor for the fatal crashes was Alcohol involvement.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 53 percent of drivers in crashes and 71 percent of drivers in alcohol-involved crashes. They account for 50 percent of licensed drivers in Albuquerque. 254 pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2009. In 2009, two "Teenagers" and four Young Adults were killed in crashes in Albuquerque. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Albuquerque 13 percent (92 of 682) were under 21.
