Demographics

In 2009, there were 15,090 licensed drivers in Gallup. Of these, there were 7,978 females and 7,112 males. The population of Gallup was 20,001. The total number of crashes in 2009 was 760, yielding a crash rate of 38 per thousand people (total number of crashes 760 divided by total population 20,001 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2007 to 2009 the number of crashes has shown an upward trend. Fatal and injury crashes have shown a downward trend from 2006 to 2009. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has decreased since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has also decreased. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has increased since last year. were two fatalities in the 7 intersections with the most crashes in 2009. Of these intersections, four involved Munoz Dr.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 206 people convicted of DWI in Gallup, 60 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 124 divided by the total number of people convicted 206 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles were the most common class, accounting for 74 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Pedestrians and Other vehicles resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 42 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 30 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 69 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Failing to yield and Following too close. There were six fatal crashes in 2009. The top contributing factor for the fatal crashes was Alcohol involvement.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 48 percent of drivers in crashes and 66 percent of drivers in alcohol-involved crashes. They account for 47 percent of licensed drivers in Gallup. 22 pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2009. In 2009, no "Teenagers" and one Young Adult were killed in crashes in Gallup. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Gallup 11 percent (8 of 71) were under 21.
