Demographics

In 2009, there were 23,160 licensed drivers in Grant County. Of these, there were 11,712 females and 11,448 males. The population of Grant County was 29,903. The total number of crashes in 2009 was 563, yielding a crash rate of 19 per thousand people (total number of crashes 563 divided by total population 29,903 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2006 to 2009 the number of crashes has shown a downward trend. Fatal and injury crashes have also shown a downward trend from 2005 to 2009. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has decreased since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has increased. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has increased since last year.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 172 people convicted of DWI in Grant County, 67 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 116 divided by the total number of people convicted 172 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles were the most common class, accounting for 41 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Overturns resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 40 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 32 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 65 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The three most common top contributing factors were Other, Driver inattention and Excessive speed. There was one fatal crash in 2009. The top contributing factor for the fatal crash was Alcohol involvement.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 58 percent of drivers in crashes and 88 percent of drivers in alcohol-involved crashes. They account for 49 percent of licensed drivers in Grant County. Three pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2009. In 2009, no "Teenagers" or Young Adults were killed in crashes in Grant County. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Grant County 24 percent (8 of 33) were under 21.
