Demographics

In 2009, there were 6,976 licensed drivers in Grants. Of these, there were 3,654 females and 3,322 males. The population of Grants was 8,772. The total number of crashes in 2009 was 201, yielding a crash rate of 23 per thousand people (total number of crashes 201 divided by total population 8,772 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2000 to 2009 the number of crashes has shown no trend. Fatal and injury crashes have shown an upward trend from 2006 to 2008. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has not changed since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has also not changed. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has not changed since last year. There was one fatality in the 7 intersections with the most crashes in 2009. Of these intersections, six involved Santa Fe Ave.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 71 people convicted of DWI in Grants, 61 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 43 divided by the total number of people convicted 71 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles were the most common class, accounting for 67 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Other vehicles resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 45 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 25 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 76 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Failing to yield and Excessive speed. There was one fatal crash in 2009. The top contributing factor for the fatal crash was Improper turning.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 53 percent of drivers in crashes and 83 percent of drivers in alcohol-involved crashes. They account for 48 percent of licensed drivers in Grants. Five pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2009. In 2009, no "Teenagers" or Young Adults were killed in crashes in Grants. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Grants 17 percent (3 of 18) were under 21.
