Demographics

In 2009, there were 12,586 licensed drivers in Las Vegas. Of these, there were 6,660 females and 5,926 males. The population of Las Vegas was 13,689. The total number of crashes in 2009 was 335, yielding a crash rate of 24 per thousand people (total number of crashes 335 divided by total population 13,689 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2007 to 2009 the number of crashes has shown an upward trend. Fatal and injury crashes have shown no trend from 2000 to 2009. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has not changed since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has also not changed. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has not changed since last year. There were no fatalities in the 7 intersections with the most crashes in 2009. Of these intersections, four involved Mills Ave.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 37 people convicted of DWI in Las Vegas, 62 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 23 divided by the total number of people convicted 37 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles were the most common class, accounting for 66 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Pedestrians resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 48 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 25 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 67 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Failing to yield, Other and Excessive speed. There was one fatal crash in 2009. The top contributing factor for the fatal crash was Alcohol involvement.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 54 percent of drivers in crashes and 67 percent of drivers in alcohol-involved crashes. They account for 47 percent of licensed drivers in Las Vegas. Five pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2009. In 2009, no "Teenagers" or Young Adults were killed in crashes in Las Vegas. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Las Vegas 33 percent (5 of 15) were under 21.

  • Population was counted according to the Census definition.
         The city population data is from the most current 2009 estimates.
  • Young adults are people between the ages of 20 and 24.
