Demographics

In 2009, there were 15,919 licensed drivers in Los Alamos. Of these, there were 7,782 females and 8,137 males. The population of Los Alamos was 18,074. The total number of crashes in 2009 was 199, yielding a crash rate of 11 per thousand people (total number of crashes 199 divided by total population 18,074 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2005 to 2008 the number of crashes has shown a downward trend. Fatal and injury crashes have shown no trend from 2000 to 2009. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has not changed since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has also not changed. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has not changed since last year. There were no fatalities in the 7 intersections with the most crashes in 2009. Of these intersections, six involved Diamond Dr.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 36 people convicted of DWI in Los Alamos, 72 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 26 divided by the total number of people convicted 36 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles were the most common class, accounting for 56 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Pedestrians resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 50 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 19 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 61 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Following too close and Other. There was one fatal crash in 2009. The top contributing factor for the fatal crash was Other.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 61 percent of drivers in crashes and 100 percent of drivers in alcohol-involved crashes. They account for 51 percent of licensed drivers in Los Alamos. Three pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2009. In 2009, no "Teenagers" or Young Adults were killed in crashes in Los Alamos. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Los Alamos 11 percent (1 of 9) were under 21.
